Ch 54: CEOE Advanced Math: Sets

About This Chapter

Looking for a quick reminder about the properties of mathematical sets? Check out the info in this chapter to brush up on the major concepts you'll need to know for questions on the CEOE Advanced Mathematics Test.

CEOE Advanced Math: Sets - Chapter Summary

In the fields of statistics, probability, and discrete mathematics, you will need to possess a clear understanding of how sets operate to solve related equations. Let our chapter bring you up to speed in this topic by showing you the major keywords, theories, and formulas. Prepare yourself for the CEOE Advanced Mathematics Test by reviewing the following concepts:

  • Unions, intersections, and elements of mathematical sets
  • Various kinds of subsets
  • Cardinality and determining the Cartesian Product
  • Associated terms and uses for Venn Diagrams
  • Different types of categorical propositions
  • Transforming categorical propositions into standard form

Using this site allows you to study for the CEOE Advanced Mathematics Test at a pace that works for you. Our instructors understand the best way to go over familiar information is to make it accessible, so all of the chapters have been broken into short, individual lessons. You can easily scan through the lesson topics to pick out the areas you want to review, and you can skip anything you already know. Even if you are an expert in certain areas, getting in a few practice questions before the actual assessment test may prove beneficial. Our lesson quizzes and chapter exams offer you questions about every topic we cover, and the multiple-choice format should prepare you for the actual CEOE test.

CEOE Advanced Math: Sets Chapter Objectives

Oklahoma requires some educators to get subject area certification, and for math teachers the certification process may require passing the CEOE Advanced Mathematics Test. To prove your mastery over mathematics, this assessment has been divided into five subareas. Over the course of four hours, test-takers will have to answer 81 questions, and almost all questions are in the selected-response style.

Of the five subareas, questions concerning sets in mathematics will most likely be found in the subarea of discrete mathematics, statistics, and probability. This area only makes up 14% of the entire test. To do well on this section of the test, use our chapter to help increase your knowledge about the properties and mathematical principles involved in solving these types of equations.

Mathematical Sets: Elements, Intersections & Unions

1. Mathematical Sets: Elements, Intersections & Unions

Today we're going to explore mathematical sets, which are surprisingly simple! Sets are just collections of any objects or concepts, also known as elements, that can be related to each other through union or intersection.

Cardinality & Types of Subsets (Infinite, Finite, Equal, Empty)

2. Cardinality & Types of Subsets (Infinite, Finite, Equal, Empty)

In this video, we will add to our knowledge of sets. We will talk about cardinality, infinite, finite, equal and the empty set. I think you will find these very straightforward, so let's begin.

How to Find the Cartesian Product

3. How to Find the Cartesian Product

The Cartesian product allows us to take two sets of mathematical objects and create one new one. With one simple idea, the Cartesian product becomes quick and easy.

Venn Diagrams: Subset, Disjoint, Overlap, Intersection & Union

4. Venn Diagrams: Subset, Disjoint, Overlap, Intersection & Union

The Venn diagram was introduced by John Venn. Yes, the Venn diagram is named after a real person! His idea was to show sets in terms of pictures. The Venn diagram is now used in many fields, including mathematics. Let's take a look at John Venn's idea.

Categorical Propositions: Subject, Predicate, Equivalent & Infinite Sets

5. Categorical Propositions: Subject, Predicate, Equivalent & Infinite Sets

Watch this video lesson to learn how categorical propositions are written. You will also see what the subject and predicate are as well as learn about equivalent and infinite sets.

How to Change Categorical Propositions to Standard Form

6. How to Change Categorical Propositions to Standard Form

Watch this video lesson to learn what categorical propositions are and how you can turn your statements into one of the four standard forms. Also, learn the names of these four standard forms and what they look like.
