Western Civilization Since 1945 - Chapter Summary and Learning Objectives

World War II may have ended more than half a century ago, but the results of that war led to significant changes in foreign and domestic policies, and many of those changes took decades to play out. The close of World War II opened the door to the Cold War between the capitalist West and the communist East. As people began to rebuild after two major wars, internal struggles and societal discontent added to the stress of foreign affairs. In this chapter you will discover the intricacies of the Cold War, including how it came to an end. After completing this chapter, you should have a better understanding of:

  • Capitalist and communist ideals
  • The development of organizations like the UN and the EU
  • Cold War politics and policies
  • The space race and other technological advances
