# Ch 17: CUNY Assessment Test in Math: Logic

### About This Chapter

## CUNY Assessment Test in Math: Logic - Chapter Summary

This chapter's lessons offer an opportunity to review the role of logic in mathematics along with a look at different types of thinking. Our videos will help you answer CUNY Assessment Test in Math questions on topics such as:

- Logic and types of critical thinking in math
- Truth values, truth tables and propositions
- Conjunctions and disjunctions in math
- Conditional statements and alternate phrasing
- Logical equivalence

You can watch these lessons on a computer or mobile device whenever you have a few minutes to devote to study. Our instructors enliven the videos with animation and plenty of examples, and you can even contact them if you have questions. Other study tools include a clickable Timeline that links back to specific parts of the lesson for review and a text transcript that highlights key terms and concepts.

### CUNY Assessment Test in Math: Logic Objectives

All newly-admitted CUNY students must have their mathematics knowledge evaluated through the CUNY Assessment Test in Math in order to be placed at the correct level for their math studies. The test consists of multiple-choice questions that are divided into four subject areas. The questions on logic are in the section on college algebra.

Each of our lessons is followed by a short quiz, and there is a comprehensive exam at the end of the chapter. These tests, like the CUNY math test, are multiple-choice, requiring you to solve a problem and select the right answer from several options. Taking them will give you an idea of what you'll face on the CUNY math test as well as providing an assessment of your learning that you can use to see where you need further review.

### 1. Critical Thinking and Logic in Mathematics

Logic has its own unique language and way of defining what is true and false. Watch this video lesson to learn how you can critically think in the language of logic while working with math.

### 2. Propositions, Truth Values and Truth Tables

Watch this video lesson and learn what truth values are and what a truth table looks like. Learn how to go from a proposition to its negation and how that affects the truth values and the truth tables.

### 3. Logical Math Connectors: Conjunctions and Disjunctions

Watch this video lesson to learn how to identify conjunctions and disjunctions. Also learn the connectors that are used with each. Learn how you can use them to make statements.

### 4. Conditional Statements in Math

Sometimes, what is true in the mathematical world of logic is false in the real world. Check out this lesson to learn how to identify conditional statements and how you can differentiate between what is logically true and what is true in reality.

### 5. Logic Laws: Converse, Inverse, Contrapositive & Counterexample

Logical statements can be useful, but only if we are able to determine their validity. In this lesson, we'll look at the various forms of a logical statement and see how they relate to each other.
