Students will review:
In this chapter, you'll learn the answers to questions including:
- What are the parts of an electrochemical cell?
- How do cell potential energy and free energy work in electrochemistry?
- Why do cathode and anode half-cell reactions occur?
- How do electrolyte and non-electrolyte solutions differ from each other?
- What is the relationship between Faraday's law and electron flow?
- How do redox reactions occur at an electrode?
- What are the major components of galvanic cells?

1. Electrochemical Cells and Electrochemistry
Electrochemical cells are part of electrochemistry. Explore the parts of an electrochemical cell, the definition of an electrochemical cell diagram, the functions of the anode and the cathode, and how to make a homemade battery.

2. Electrochemistry: Free Energy and Cell Potential Energy
Gibbs Free Energy and cell potential energy measure the spontaneity of electrochemical reactions as energy is converted from chemical to electrical. Learn about galvanic cells, how to measure cell potential energy, and free energy vs. cell potential energy.

3. Cathode and Anode Half-Cell Reactions
Electrochemical reactions are comprised of two half-reactions, anode electrode & cathode electrode, that are added together to produce the full cell reaction. Learn about electrode half-reactions, corrosion, and how to use half-reaction formulas to calculate cell voltage potential.

4. Solutions, Electrolytes and Nonelectrolytes
Solutions are homogenous mixtures composed of a solvent and a solute. Learn about how they are created, and explore electrolytes, nonelectrolytes, molarity, molality, mass percent, ionic substances, and covalent substances.

5. Nernst Equation: Example & Calculator
In this lesson, you'll find out what the battery in your cell phone has to do with the Nernst equation. Through the use of easy-to-understand explanations, you'll have the chance to decode the equation and see how it works under a set of conditions.
