Ethnicity and Geography - Chapter Summary and Learning Objectives
Ethnicity is sometimes a complex concept to understand. In this series of video lessons, a qualified instructor will lead you through an exploration of ethnicity and how it relates to race. You'll see how ethnicity is affected by geography and state borders. Common roots of ethnic conflict will also be introduced, including ethnic cleansing. While geography can emphasize differences among ethnicities, in some cases, you'll find that despite geography, there are similarities, too. In these lessons, you'll learn things like:

|Ethnic Competition, Division & Domination||Describe the causes of ethnic strife, including how some ethnicities try to dominate nationalities, and how some ethnicities are divided by national borders.|
|Ethnic Cleansing: Definition & Examples||Define the activities known as 'ethnic cleansing', and examine European and Central African examples of ethnic cleansing.|
1. Race and Ethnicity Definitions: Social Minority vs. Social Majority
This lesson introduces concepts important to understanding race and ethnicity. First, a distinction is made between 'race' and 'ethnicity.' Next, the idea of a social minority is defined, along with distinction and subordination. Finally, U.S. trends regarding minority influence are outlined.
2. Transforming Ethnicities into Nationalities
This lesson will discuss the process of how ethnicities transform into nationalities. In doing this, it will highlight the concepts of self-determination, nation-states, centripetal force, and ethnographic boundaries.
3. Ethnic Competition, Division & Domination
This lesson will explore the concepts of ethnicity in reference to ethnic competition, division, and domination. It will also highlight the atrocity of ethnic cleansing.
4. Ethnic Cleansing: Definition & Examples
This lesson will explain the tragedy of ethnic cleansing. In doing so, it will highlight examples from the 1990s, the Holocaust, the Spanish Inquisition, and even the ancient world.
