About This Chapter
Weekly Syllabus
Below is a sample breakdown of the Fluid Mechanics chapter into a 5-day school week. Based on the pace of your course, you may need to adapt the lesson plan to fit your needs.
Day | Topics | Key Terms and Concepts Covered |
---|---|---|
Monday | Fluids in physics fundamentals | Analyze the classifications and characteristics of fluids |
Tuesday | Density and pressure | Define the concepts of density and pressure, review related units of measurements and conversion formulas, identify hydrostatic pressure, and point out hydrostatic pressure equations |
Wednesday | Buoyancy and fluid formulas | Buoyancy definition and calculations, Archimedes' Principle of density and force, flow rate, fluid mass, and the continuity equation |

1. Fluids in Physics: Definition and Characteristics
Fluids really know how to move! As flowing materials, fluids have some unique properties that help us understand and describe them. In this lesson you'll explore what fluids are and how they are defined in the world of physics.

2. What Is Density? - Explanation & Examples
After watching this video, you will be able to explain what density is, give examples of high and low density, and calculate density using an equation. A short quiz will follow.

3. Pressure: Definition, Units, and Conversions
Have you ever wondered what pressure is and how it gets measured? In this lesson, we are going to define pressure and explain some of the units that are used to express measurements of pressure.

4. Hydrostatic Pressure: Definition, Equation, and Calculations
This video lesson will introduce you to hydrostatic pressure in a liquid, as well as provide examples for how to calculate the liquid's pressure at a given depth.

5. Buoyancy: Calculating Force and Density with Archimedes' Principle
Knowledge of the buoyant force is important when trying to understand why some objects float while other objects sink. In this lesson you'll learn about this unique force and how we apply it to various situations using Archimedes' Principle.

6. Fluid Mass, Flow Rate and the Continuity Equation
Fluids rarely stay put, so we need to understand how they move. In this lesson, you will learn about how the movement of fluids is influenced by the space it passes through, as well as see examples of how to calculate aspects of this movement.

7. Bernoulli's Principle: Definition and Examples
Understanding how a moving fluid's speed and pressure change as it flows along is not only important for building airplanes but also for backyard fun. In this video lesson you'll learn about Bernoulli's principle and identify some practical applications of this concept.

8. Bernoulli's Equation: Formula, Examples & Problems
Bernoulli's equation describes an important relationship between pressure, speed, and height of an ideal fluid. In this lesson you will learn Bernoulli's equation, as well as see through an example how in an ideal fluid, the dynamics of that fluid remain constant.

9. Torricelli's Theorem: Tank Experiment, Formula and Examples
Torricelli's theorem has practical applications in everyday life. This physical law explains an important relationship between fluid exit velocity and the height of that fluid in a container. Here, you will learn about this relationship as well as see how to calculate exit velocity using Torricelli's theorem.

10. Predict Whether an Object Will Float or Sink: Understanding Density
After watching this video, you will be able to describe the forces that act on an object in water and complete calculations to figure out if an object will float or sink. A short quiz will follow.
