1. What Is a Foodborne Illness? - Definition and Common Types
In this lesson we will discuss illness caused by consuming contaminated foods. This will include defining the little known difference between food poisoning and food infection.
2. Cavities and Tooth Decay: Bacterial Causes of Common Dental Issues
Did you know that getting cavities in your teeth is an infectious disease? Cavities are a result of bacteria in the genus Streptococcus. In this lesson, we will examine how bacteria contribute to tooth decay.
3. What Is Botulism? - Food Poisoning Caused By the Bacterium Clostridium botulinum
The most toxic natural substance on Earth is not the venom of a snake or spider. Instead, it is a toxin made by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. We will examine Botulism, a type of food poisoning caused by this toxin.
4. Salmonella: Symptoms of Food Poisoning Caused By Salmonella
There is a very good reason for not eating raw cookie dough, despite how delicious it is. In this lesson, we will look at Salmonella, a bacterium often found in the dough's raw eggs, which can cause a serious case of foodborne illness.

Have you ever heard of the infamous Typhoid Mary, a cook responsible for spreading disease to over a thousand unlucky diners? In this lesson, we will learn about typhoid fever and the causative organism Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi.

Clostridium perfringens is a common soil bacteria that causes a mild case of food poisoning. In this lesson, we will look at one particularly severe outbreak and the factors leading to the higher-than-normal number of deaths that occurred.

Throughout history, outbreaks of cholera have devastated populations all over the world. In this first of two lessons, we will begin our investigation of cholera by looking at the bacterial species that causes the disease: Vibrio cholerae.

Cholera is a deadly disease characterized by profuse, watery diarrhea. In this second lesson dedicated to cholera, we will examine the treatment and prevention of the disease.

Once thought to be caused by a stressful life and spicy foods, stomach ulcers have been causing severe pain in people for years. In this lesson, we will look at the bacteria Helicobacter pylori, now confirmed to be the real cause of most stomach ulcers.
15. Brucellosis: Infectious Disease Caused by the Brucella Bacteria
In this lesson we will learn about the bacterial pathogen Brucella. Brucella is a human and livestock pathogen that was also the first biological agent weaponized by the United States.
16. Dysentery and the Bacteria Shigella: Symptoms & Causes
You can catch all sorts of diseases from fecal-oral contamination. Shigella is a human fecal bacteria that can cause a potentially fatal dysentery by consuming as few as 10 cells, an amount far too small to ever notice.
17. Food Poisoning from Staphylococcus Aureus Bacteria
