Ch 10: HiSET: Classification of Organisms

About This Chapter

Review the classification of bacteria, plants, animals and other living things. Prepare for the HiSET Science exam through these engaging videos and self-assessment quizzes that cover the evolutionary history of organisms.

Classification of Organisms - Chapter Summary

The lessons in this chapter can help you brush up on your knowledge of taxonomy and the naming of living things in order to help prepare you for the HiSET Science test. The videos in this chapter cover the classification, characteristics and evolution of:

  • Prokaryotes
  • Protists
  • Plants
  • Fungi
  • Animals
  • Humans

The video lessons in this chapter are taught by experienced instructors who explain key taxonomy topics using graphics and examples. Multiple-choice quizzes and a chapter test are also available to help you review key points and discern which concepts could use some extra study time.

HiSET Science Objectives

Science is just one subject covered on the HiSET high school equivalency exam. This exam is an alternative to the GED and is available in about 12 states. The 80-minute science exam includes questions on the life, physical and earth sciences. The classification of organisms may be covered within the life science questions, which make up about half of this test. Review for possible questions related to the classification and evolutionary history of organisms though the lessons in this chapter.

Taxonomy: Classification and Naming of Living Things

1. Taxonomy: Classification and Naming of Living Things

Scientific names are used in taxonomy, the study of naming and classifying living things. Learn more about the characteristics of organisms in the six kingdoms and how the kingdoms are grouped into three domains.

The Evolution of Prokaryotes: Archaebacteria and Eubacteria

2. The Evolution of Prokaryotes: Archaebacteria and Eubacteria

Learn about the evolution of Prokaryotes and their two domains: archaea and bacteria. The topics covered include the definition and characteristics of prokaryotes, and the difference between archaebacteria and eubacteria.

The Evolution of Protists: Importance & Evolutionary History

3. The Evolution of Protists: Importance & Evolutionary History

Learn about the evolution of protists and their importance. Look at how protists are defined, different types of protists, and why these unique organisms are important.

The Evolution of Plants and Fungi: Characteristics & Evolutionary History

4. The Evolution of Plants and Fungi: Characteristics & Evolutionary History

The evolution of plants and fungi have both similarities and differences. Discover the evolutionary history and characteristics of plants and fungi in this lesson.

The Evolution of Animals: Importance & Evolutionary History

5. The Evolution of Animals: Importance & Evolutionary History

Animals, including humans, consists of multi-cellular organisms that have undergone an evolution from early life forms. Learn about the characteristics of organisms, their body structures, and the importance of understanding the evolutionary history and characteristics of animals.
