Ch 7: HiSET Mathematics: Matrices and Determinants

About This Chapter

All of the concepts explaining matrices and determinants in this chapter can prepare you for related questions on the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET). Our videos and transcripts teach you just what you need to know for the exam.

HiSET Mathematics: Matrices and Determinants - Chapter Summary

We want you to understand the fundamentals of matrices and key functions that you can use with them so you feel confident answering the types of questions tackle on the HiSET. Our straight-forward video lessons teach you how to solve problems that involve:

  • Identifying a matrix
  • Performing matrix row operations
  • Matrix notation
  • Equal matrices
  • Math operations with matrices
  • Using and solving multiplicative inverses of matrices and matrix equations
  • Solving inverse matrices
  • Taking a determinant of a matrix

Transcripts are also listed under the videos for those who would benefit from reading through the lesson on their own after listening to the video presentation.

Objectives of the HiSET Mathematics: Matrices and Determinants Chapter

The HiSET math exam measures your understanding of math operations in order to verify your academic abilities as well as your college or career readiness. The information in this chapter will be on the Numbers and Operations on Numbers part of the exam, and about nine questions out of the total 50 will be included.

You will have to find the right answer to each multiple-choice question on this exam, so be sure to use our lesson quizzes to practice as much as you need to.

What is a Matrix?

1. What is a Matrix?

As math gets more and more complicated and there become more and more numbers flying around, it becomes really handy to put all these numbers in a nice organized grid... hello matrices! Learn about what they are and why there are used.

How to Perform Matrix Row Operations

2. How to Perform Matrix Row Operations

Watch this video lesson to learn how easy it is to perform row operations on a matrix. Learn how to perform the three basic operations easily and quickly.

Matrix Notation, Equal Matrices & Math Operations with Matrices

3. Matrix Notation, Equal Matrices & Math Operations with Matrices

Watch this video lesson to learn about the basics of matrices and what kinds of math operations you can do with them. Also learn how to determine whether two matrices are the same or not.

Multiplicative Inverses of Matrices and Matrix Equations

4. Multiplicative Inverses of Matrices and Matrix Equations

Watch this video lesson to learn about another method you can use to solve a matrix problem if you are given the inverse of the matrix. You will also learn the identifying mark of the multiplicative inverse of a matrix.

How to Solve Inverse Matrices

5. How to Solve Inverse Matrices

Watch this video lesson to learn what kinds of matrix operations you can take to find the inverse of a matrix. Also learn why matrix inverses are useful.

How to Take a Determinant of a Matrix

6. How to Take a Determinant of a Matrix

Matrices are incredibly powerful and can help you do all sorts of things, but one of the most basic (and surprisingly helpful) operations you can perform on one is to take its determinant. Learn how to do that here!
