MCAS STE Biology: The Science Lab Chapter Objectives
The MCAS STE Biology exam is one of four science and engineering/technology exams taken by high school students in the state of Massachusetts. The test is designed to assess students' proficiency in biology as determined by the Massachusetts curriculum framework. The MCAS STE Biology exam contains 40 multiple-choice questions and 5 open-ended responses. You must score a 220 or higher on one of the four STE exams to qualify for high school graduation.
1. Common Laboratory Equipment: Types & Uses
Biologists use all kinds of equipment in their labs to run their experiments. In this lesson, you'll identify some of the most common pieces of equipment as well as when you should or shouldn't use them.
2. How to Use Science Lab Equipment & Materials
Learn how to use some common pieces of science lab equipment, including scales, probeware, meters sticks, microscopes, and computers. Learn about setup, calibration, measurement technique, maintenance, and storage.
3. Introduction to the Compound Microscope: Parts & Uses
The compound light microscope is a useful tool in any biology laboratory. In this lesson, you'll be introduced to the parts of a compound microscope, as well as understand the function of each of those parts.
4. Understanding Laboratory Measurements: Units & Types
There are many different units that can be used for measurements. This may not only lead to incorrect data measurements, but also to confusion about which units are most appropriate. Therefore, a standard set of units is used for each type of measurement in the biology lab.
5. The Metric System: Units and Conversion
Just like you and your friend communicate using the same language, scientists all over the world need to use the same language when reporting the measurements they make. This language is called the metric system. In this lesson we will cover the metric units for length, mass, volume, density and temperature, and also discuss how to convert among them.

What is a scientific model? How can we create them? How can they be used in biology? In this lesson, you'll answer all of these questions as you explore how a model called the Hardy-Weinberg theorem can be used to predict how a population will change over time.

Working with biological specimens can be interesting and rewarding. But we need to be careful when handling and disposing of these types of specimens because they do have the potential to do harm both in and out of the lab.

Even with proper precautions, lab accidents do happen. When they do, knowing what safety equipment is in your lab, where it is located, and how to use it can prevent further harm to both the lab and the people working in it.

Laboratory safety is not fun, but following the rules ensures that lab activities can be enjoyed by everyone. In this lesson, we cover some basic lab safety rules to follow that will help lab time be both safe and fun.
10. Personal Safety Equipment for the Science Lab
Science labs are great places to explore and learn. But they're only as safe as the people who use them, so in this lesson, we'll discuss some of the ways that you can protect yourself and prevent personal harm in the event of a lab accident.
11. Understanding Risks & Taking Safety Precautions in Science Experiments
An important step in designing your experiment involves identifying and evaluating any potential safety risks. Knowing what these risks are ahead of time can help you avoid accidents and dangerous situations, which helps keep the experiment safe and fun for all.
12. Safe Chemical Storage, Use & Disposal
An important part of lab safety involves the correct usage, storage, and disposal of chemicals. Lab safety is everyone's responsibility, so it's important that you know the proper procedures and protocols for using chemicals in the lab.
13. Disposing of Hazardous Materials: Public Safety & Controversy
Hazardous materials come in all types and from many sources. Because they may be harmful to human health, it's important to dispose of them properly and safely. It's also due to this potential harm that both their use and disposal are controversial.
