Ch 40: Measurement and the Metric System

About This Chapter

Study methods for working with metric units, scales and measures to prepare for the GED exam's mathematical reasoning section. Video lessons and quizzes can help you examine standard units of measure, conversion factors and other topics covered on this high school equivalency exam.

Measurement and the Metric System - Chapter Summary

Use this chapter to find out what the metric system is used for and prepare for mathematical reasoning GED questions on this topic. Lessons can teach you how to:

  • Understand standard units of measure
  • Convert between units in the metric system
  • Perform basic operations with measurements
  • Read and interpret scales and measures

Whether you choose to access lessons in the form of short videos or corresponding transcripts, both formats break down chapter content into manageable portions. You can use these materials along with the self-assessment quizzes to explore subjects covered on this part of the GED exam and determine which areas you need to brush up on before test day.

Measurement and the Metric System - Chapter Objectives

If you're an adult learner, passing scores on the GED exam can be used to earn a high school equivalency diploma and meet minimum educational requirements for a job or postsecondary training program. The exam's mathematical reasoning portion is one of four test sections. It lasts 115 minutes and includes 46 questions appearing in multiple-choice, matching and fill-in-the blank formats, among others.

Approximately half of these test questions assess your quantitative problem-solving skills, while the remaining questions test your ability to solve problems algebraically. Take advantage of the lessons included in this chapter to prepare for questions that ask you to be familiar with units used to measure length, weight, time and capacity. Our instructors can also help you learn methods for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing various units of measure and converting between them.

Standard Units of Measurement for Length, Weight, Time & Capacity

1. Standard Units of Measurement for Length, Weight, Time & Capacity

Watch this video lesson to learn how to recognize the various units of measurement for length, weight, time and volume. Learn to recognize both U.S. units and metric units.

How to Convert Standard Units of Measure

2. How to Convert Standard Units of Measure

The United States uses pounds, miles, and Fahrenheit for measurements, but the rest of the world uses the metric system. This video lesson will help you to convert from one to the other easily, so you can understand kilometers and kilograms, too.

How to Perform Basic Operations with Measurements

3. How to Perform Basic Operations with Measurements

In this video lesson, you will learn how measurements are very much like variables when it comes to adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing them. You will also see examples of how they are done.

The Metric System: Units and Conversion

4. The Metric System: Units and Conversion

Just like you and your friend communicate using the same language, scientists all over the world need to use the same language when reporting the measurements they make. This language is called the metric system. In this lesson we will cover the metric units for length, mass, volume, density and temperature, and also discuss how to convert among them.

How to Convert Units in the Metric System

5. How to Convert Units in the Metric System

If you can make dinner, you can convert units in the metric system. It's that easy! In this lesson, you'll learn about the three key things you'll need to perform conversions.

How to Take Measurements with Scales, Meters & Gauges

6. How to Take Measurements with Scales, Meters & Gauges

In the real world, we take measurements all the time. Measurements are taken when you drive and when you weigh yourself, for example. Watch this video lesson to learn how you can take measurements of things that are important.

How to Read and Interpret Scale Drawings

7. How to Read and Interpret Scale Drawings

Watch this video lesson to learn how scale drawings and legends are used on maps and blueprints. Learn skills that will serve you well when traveling and when looking at the blueprints of a car.
