Ch 24: MEGA Middle School Math: Factoring

About This Chapter

Watch the lessons of this chapter and learn more about factoring in algebra as well as the processes of finding factors and multiples of numbers so that you will be better prepared for related questions on the MEGA Middle School Education Mathematics exam.

MEGA Middle School Math: Factoring - Chapter Summary

The lessons of this chapter will help you review the steps used to factor in algebra, factor out factors of expressions and whole numbers, and find multiples of numbers. These lessons have been placed in this course so that you may improve these skills and use them when answering algebraic questions on the Missouri Educator Gateway Assessments (MEGA) Middle School Education Mathematics exam. Our expert instructors will discuss:

  • Equivalent expressions and fraction notations
  • Combining numbers and variables
  • Transforming factoring into division problems
  • Steps used when factoring by grouping
  • Finding factors and multiples of whole numbers

These lessons are compatible with tablets and other mobile devices so that you may have a convenient way to study factoring in algebra and arithmetic. Along with these lesson videos, this chapter has a series of transcripts, quizzes and a practice chapter exam. Read the transcripts and complete the quizzes to discover areas of weakness. You can then take the practice chapter exam to see if you are ready for questions on the MEGA Middle School Education: Mathematics exam about factoring.

MEGA Middle School Math: Factoring Objectives

The state of Missouri issues the MEGA Middle School Education Mathematics exam to its middle-grades-math-teacher candidates to ensure that they have the competencies required to teach middle-grades mathematics. Completing this computer-based certification exam involves answering 80 multiple-choice questions in 2.5 hours. Of these questions, 19% belong to the content domain of Numbers and Operations, and another 36% belong to the content domain of Algebra and Functions. This chapter has been set up to help you prepare for questions in both of these domains that will require you to use factoring techniques.

Equivalent Expressions and Fraction Notation

2. Equivalent Expressions and Fraction Notation

Did you know that two fractions can look completely different, but actually be the same? In this lesson, we'll learn about equivalent fractions. We'll also learn to simplify fraction notation.

Factoring Out Variables: Instructions & Examples

3. Factoring Out Variables: Instructions & Examples

Let's find the factors. In this lesson, we'll learn how to factor out numbers or variables from an expression. We'll even learn how to factor variables with exponents.

Combining Numbers and Variables When Factoring

4. Combining Numbers and Variables When Factoring

With an expression, you know how to factor out a number, and you know how to factor out a variable. In this lesson, we'll learn how to factor out combined numbers and variables.

Transforming Factoring Into A Division Problem

5. Transforming Factoring Into A Division Problem

Watch this video lesson to learn how you can factor a problem by turning it into a division problem. Learn how this actually helps you to factor and keep your numbers straight.

Factoring By Grouping: Steps, Verification & Examples

6. Factoring By Grouping: Steps, Verification & Examples

How do you factor an expression if all the terms don't share a common factor? Grouping! In this lesson, we'll learn how to use grouping to help factor expressions.

Arithmetic with Whole Numbers

7. Arithmetic with Whole Numbers

There are four basic mathematical operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. These four operations are used in a wide range of everyday skills and are the fundamental blocks of arithmetic.
