Michigan Merit Exam: Ecosystems & Populations Chapter Objectives
Every spring, the Michigan Department of Education tests public school 11th graders to gauge their academic development against state standards. This is accomplished via a series of tests that are collectively called the Michigan Merit Exam. This chapter is relevant to one of these tests: the computer-based M-Step science test. The M-Step has an estimated run of 50 minutes.
1. The Environment, Levels of Ecology and Ecosystems
Do you know the difference between an environment and an ecosystem? In this lesson, you'll find out what makes an environment, and what makes an ecosystem. You'll also learn what ecology is and some of the ways that scientists study ecology using organisms, populations, communities, ecosystems and even the entire biosphere.
2. Living Systems Requirement for Free Energy and Matter
Free energy and matter are required by all living things in order to grow, reproduce, and maintain biological processes. Additionally, free energy and matter must also be recycled through the environment in order to remove dead material and allow for new growth.
3. Interaction of Major Systems & Processes in Animals
In this lesson, you'll learn about interactions at all levels of animals: organelles, cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, and organisms themselves. You'll also gain a better understanding of the complexity of the organization of living things.
4. Interaction of Major Systems & Processes in Plants
In this lesson, we'll be exploring the relationship between major systems and processes in plants. We'll look at the ascending cellular structure of plants from organelles to organism and how these relate to molecular functions.
5. Food Chains, Trophic Levels and Energy Flow in an Ecosystem
In this lesson, you'll learn about food chains, food webs, and the different roles that organisms play in an ecosystem. You'll also learn about how energy flows through an ecosystem.
6. Ecological Resilience
After completing this lesson, you will be able to explain what ecological resilience is, and how humans impacts increase the need for it among plants and other animals. A short quiz will follow.
7. Ecological Succession: From Pioneer to Climax Communities
Just as people grow and change so, too, do ecosystems. Watch this lesson to learn about ecological succession from the beginning stages of development to a community's ultimate destination, or climax.
8. Succession in Freshwater and Terrestrial Ecosystems
The world's many freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems are constantly changing. This lesson will discuss how these ecosystems change over time and how they recover after disturbances occur.
9. What is Biodiversity? - Definition and Relation to Ecosystem Stability
Imagine making a list of all of the species you have ever heard of; it would be an enormous list! There are many different species on this planet. This lesson will explore the diversity of species, as well as the different types of diversity and how diversity of life is essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems.
10. Human Impacts on the Environment
The human population continues to grow, but the size of Earth and the resources available for our use are limited. Humans greatly impact the world around them, and our actions can and often do have dramatic and long-lasting consequences.
11. Pollution and Habitat Destruction: The Human Factors Contributing To Endangerment & Extinction
In this lesson you will learn about two ways humans contribute to species extinction. We break up habitats by building roads and clearing land, and we pollute both land and water. You will also learn about the specific terms used to describe the processes, habitat fragmentation and anthropogenic pollution.
12. Populations: Density, Survivorship and Life Histories
Have you ever wondered how biologists determine the populations of animals in a particular geographic area? Watch this video lesson to find out, and discover how scientists look at the survivorship and life histories of many different species.
13. How Introduced and Invasive Species Alter Ecological Balance
What happens to your block when a new neighbor moves in? Something changes, right? Now think about that on an ecological scale: what happens to an environment when a new SPECIES moves in?
14. What Is IPAT? - Factors of the Human Impact on the Environment
What do the letters IPAT have to do with the environment? Learn how this four-letter equation helps explain the environmental impact of different variables, including population, affluence, and technology.
15. Deforestation, Desertification & Declining Biological Diversity
When trees are lost due to deforestation, the result can be a drier climate and desertification or the transformation of the once fertile land to desert. Learn how deforestation and desertification can lead to a decline in biological diversity.
16. Pollution: Physical, Chemical & Biological
Pollution is the presence of unwanted substances in an environment. It is often the result of human interference. Learn about physical, chemical and biological pollutants and see examples of each.
17. Human Behaviors that Threaten Environmental Sustainability
The environment has a remarkable ability to sustain itself. However, human behaviors disrupt the natural environment and threaten environmental sustainability. Learn how population growth, depletion of resources, and pollution threaten nature.
18. Sustainable Development within Environmental Limits
Sustainable development is a way of meeting the needs of both present and future generations. Learn how sustainable development must work within the environmental limits so future generations can benefit from the rich resources of the environment.
