Objectives of the MTEL Biology: History and Issues in Science Chapter
The MTEL Biology exam is a test that examines your knowledge and comprehension of the full range of topics that make up the discipline of biology. Your score is used to determine your eligibility for teacher licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The topics under History and Issues in Science are part of the Nature of Science Objective. There will be between 12 and 14 multiple-choice questions on this objective. The self-assessment quizzes we give you let you test your comprehension of the material and get a feel for the types of questions that will appear on the exam.
The MTEL Biology exam includes 100 multiple-choice questions and two open-response questions. For the multiple-choice questions, you will read a question or passage and select the correct response from several possibilities presented. For the open-response questions, you will compose a logical, organized and articulate essay that demonstrates your ability to integrate material about biology into a cohesive narrative.

In this lesson we explore the Scientific Revolution and the controversy which surrounds the very term. Additionally, we learn about just a few of the most important thinkers of the period who laid the foundation for our modern understanding of the world.
2. Breakthroughs in Medicine & Chemistry: Examples & Empiricism
In this lesson, we explore the medical and chemical breakthroughs which occurred in the 16th and 17th centuries as part of the era's increased emphasis on empiricism and the concurring Scientific Revolution.
3. Effects of the Scientific Revolution
In this lesson, we explore the philosophical, religious, and cultural effects of the Scientific Revolution on Early Modern society - effects that forever changed the Western view of the universe and humanity's place within it.
4. Ethical and Safety Concerns for DNA Technology
DNA technology is very powerful and has had positive influences on many fields and industries. However, DNA technology is not perfect. In this lesson, you will explore some of the safety and ethical concerns that people have regarding this field of study.
