Ch 3: MTEL Math: Fractions

About This Chapter

By exploring this chapter and taking several self-assessment quizzes, you can get ready for the MTEL Mathematics examination. Expand your ability to perform operations with fractions by reviewing the previously-studied concepts in the chapter's videos.

MTEL Math: Fractions - Chapter Summary

Reinforce what you've learned about fractions and develop the skills of a math specialist. When you study the videos in this chapter, you may become more prepared to take the test for teacher licensure. Brush up on the rules for writing, flipping, simplifying and performing operations with fractions. Get a handle on the differences between numerators and denominators as well as proper and improper fractions. Reviewing this chapter prior to sitting for the MTEL Mathematics examination could help you to:

  • Define and identify different types of fractions
  • Use multiples to calculate a least common denominator
  • Order and compare fractions
  • Convert from improper fractions to mixed numbers
  • Add and subtract mixed numbers, like fractions, and unlike fractions
  • Multiply and divide mixed numbers and fractions
  • Work through complex fractions

Taught by well-qualified instructors, many of these educational lessons are under ten minutes long. Take the opportunity to watch them online via a phone, laptop or tablet as you go about your busy day. The chapter teaches through animation, step-by-step examples and transcripts. There's also an ask-an-expert function on the Dashboard area. Make sure to take the five-question quizzes before going on to the next lesson.

MTEL Math: Fractions - Chapter Objectives

Five multiple-choice subareas and one open-response section make up the four-hour long MTEL Mathematics examination. Along with decimals, integers, percents and ratios, fractions are a featured part of the Number Sense and Operations subarea of the assessment. This is the area in which you'll apply your understanding of this chapter's lessons while pursuing your objective of earning a teaching license in mathematics. Number Sense and Operations happens to be the first subarea of the computer-based examination, and there are 14 to 16 multiple-choice questions to answer. It's also worth 12% of the test. Questions that span the whole examination include 100 multiple-choice items and two open-response assignments.

Test your knowledge with a 30-question chapter practice test
What is a Fraction? - Definition and Types

1. What is a Fraction? - Definition and Types

Fractions may be your friend's worst nightmare, but they don't have to be yours. Watch this video lesson to learn about fractions and how you can understand them easily. Also learn to identify the different types of fractions.

How to Find Least Common Denominators

2. How to Find Least Common Denominators

Finding a Least Common Denominator is an important tool when working with fractions. To find least common denominators, we will use multiples of our numbers.

Comparing and Ordering Fractions

3. Comparing and Ordering Fractions

Comparing and ordering fractions is way to examine fractions that contain different-sized sets. In order to compare these fractions, you must find a common denominator and make equivalent fractions.

Changing Between Improper Fraction and Mixed Number Form

4. Changing Between Improper Fraction and Mixed Number Form

Improper fractions and mixed numbers are two different types of fractions. They both have different purposes when using fractions in a problem. In this lesson, you will learn how to convert between these two different forms.

How to Add and Subtract Like Fractions and Mixed Numbers

5. How to Add and Subtract Like Fractions and Mixed Numbers

When adding and subtracting fractions, you must be sure to have a common denominator. Once you have a common denominator, you just add or subtract your numerators and then your whole numbers. Learn how in this lesson.

How to Add and Subtract Unlike Fractions and Mixed Numbers

6. How to Add and Subtract Unlike Fractions and Mixed Numbers

Simple fraction arithmetic gets a little more complicated when our denominators don't match. In this lesson, we'll learn how to add and subtract unlike fractions. Then, we'll do the same with mixed numbers.

Multiplying Fractions and Mixed Numbers

7. Multiplying Fractions and Mixed Numbers

Multiplying fractions is much more straightforward than adding, subtracting or dividing fractions. In this lesson, learn how it works. We'll also learn how to multiply mixed numbers.

Dividing Fractions and Mixed Numbers

8. Dividing Fractions and Mixed Numbers

Dividing fractions and mixed numbers? It sounds daunting, but it's not as tricky as it sounds. In this lesson, we'll learn how to divide fractions and mixed numbers.

How to Solve Complex Fractions

9. How to Solve Complex Fractions

Did you know fractions can nest within fractions? In this lesson, we'll learn about complex fractions and look at two different methods for solving them.
