About This Chapter

This chapter will help you review the basic concepts and processes used in algebra as you study for related questions on the MTEL Mathematics/Science (Middle School) exam.

MTEL Middle School Math/Science: Algebra Basics - Chapter Summary

In these lessons, our professional instructors will explain the concept of variables, the order of operations and the processes of distributing and simplifying. Use these lessons to help you recall how to solve algebraic problems. Prepare for questions on the Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL) Mathematics/Science (Middle School) exam that will require you to:

  • Understand algebraic concepts
  • Know the parts of an algebraic equations
  • Distribute algebraic expressions
  • Use the order of operations
  • Distribute positive and negative signs
  • Simplify algebraic expression with negative signs

If you feel you are short on time and don't want to spend a lot of it at your computer, watch these lessons on your mobile devices at your own convenience. In addition to watching the lesson videos, read the lesson transcripts and take the accompanying quizzes that will measure your level of learning. Questions can be submitted to our expert instructors.

MTEL Middle School Math/Science: Algebra Basics Objectives

As part of your certification processes, the MTEL Mathematics/Science (Middle School) exam will test your understanding of mathematics and science. This computer-based certification exam will ask you a series of 100 multiple-choice and two constructed-response questions during a four-hour testing session. Twelve percent of the material covered in this exam will ensure your knowledge of mathematical patterns, relations and algebra. Use this chapter to improve your comprehension of algebraic process by reviewing the basics.

Algebra Vocabulary Terms

1. Algebra Vocabulary Terms

Watch this video lesson to learn about some basic vocabulary words that you will come across again and again in the course of your studies in algebra. After you finish this video, you should know and be able to identify each term.

What is a Variable in Algebra?

2. What is a Variable in Algebra?

Did you ever encounter something like a + b = c and wonder how all these letters snuck into a math problem? In this lesson, we'll learn about variables, as well as other parts of equations, constants and coefficients.

Why Do We Distribute in Algebra? - Explanation & Examples

3. Why Do We Distribute in Algebra? - Explanation & Examples

What's the purpose of distribution in algebra? In this lesson, we'll find out why we distribute. We'll also look at examples and sample problems that involve basic distribution.

Distributing First vs. Adding First: Differences & Examples

4. Distributing First vs. Adding First: Differences & Examples

When we need to simplify an expression, how do we know if we should distribute first or add first? In this lesson, we'll look at when this matters and how to make the best decision.

Distributing Positive and Negative Signs

5. Distributing Positive and Negative Signs

It's not just numbers and variables that get distributed. Positive and negative signs can, too. In this lesson, we'll learn how to distribute positive and negative signs correctly.

Negative Signs and Simplifying Algebraic Expressions

6. Negative Signs and Simplifying Algebraic Expressions

Don't let negative signs get you down. In this lesson, we'll stay positive as we practice simplifying algebraic expressions that have those tricky negative signs.

Distributing Algebraic Expressions with Numbers and Variables

7. Distributing Algebraic Expressions with Numbers and Variables

So, you can simplify an algebraic expression when you need to distribute a number? Great! But what if you need to distribute a variable or a variable with an exponent? Learn how in this lesson.
