### MTEL Middle School Math/Science: Laboratory Procedures & Safety Chapter Objectives

The primary objective of the MTEL Middle School Math/Science exam is to ensure that each candidate meets Massachusetts' qualifications for teacher certification. By working through the Laboratory Procedures & Safety chapter of our MTEL Middle School Math/Science test prep course, you can prepare for the questions in the History, Philosophy and Methodology of Science subarea. This subarea comprises 8% of the test score.

There are 100 multiple-choice questions (80% of the total score) and two written response assignments (20% of the score) for the MTEL Middle School Math/Science exam. The test is taken on computer.

### 1. Chemistry Lab Safety & Accuracy Procedures & Equipment

Working safely and collecting accurate data are the two most important parts of working in a chemistry lab. This lesson will give tips so you can succeed in both areas.

### 2. Chemistry Lab Equipment: Supplies, Glassware & More

When you bake a cake, you use different tools for each step in the process: a bowl for mixing, cups for measuring ingredients and an oven for baking. In this lesson, you will discover the name and purpose of many of the different tools that are used in the chemistry lab.

### 3. How to Identify Chemicals in Solution: Test Methods & Materials

Do you have a mysterious solution sitting around? Learn to identify it using one of the following methods: through precipitation, using conduction, using a flame test, using an acid-base indicator and observing the color of the solution.

### 4. Scientific Tools and Their Uses

A scientist relies on tools to help make observations, carry out experiments and take measurements. Learn about the scientific tools used in a lab and the advanced tools used by scientists in the life sciences.

### 5. Conducting Scientific Research: Safety Concerns & Regulations

When scientists conduct research, safety is a top concern. Learn about the kinds of hazards a scientist faces depending on the kind of work that they do, as well as some risks with scientific research. Plus, see how safety regulations protect all of us.

### 6. Understanding Risks & Taking Safety Precautions in Science Experiments

An important step in designing your experiment involves identifying and evaluating any potential safety risks. Knowing what these risks are ahead of time can help you avoid accidents and dangerous situations, which helps keep the experiment safe and fun for all.

### 7. Understanding Laboratory Measurements: Units & Types

There are many different units that can be used for measurements. This may not only lead to incorrect data measurements, but also to confusion about which units are most appropriate. Therefore, a standard set of units is used for each type of measurement in the biology lab.

### 8. What Is a Meniscus? - Definition, Uses & Lab Examples

Liquids can be tricky to measure because surface tension causes them to do interesting things like forming a meniscus. In this video lesson you'll learn what a meniscus is, why it forms, and how to correctly read the volume of a liquid using the meniscus at the surface.

### 9. Using Displacement to Calculate the Volume of an Object

Determining the volume of an object is easy if that object is uniform and has a regular shape. For objects that are irregularly shaped, using the edges is not so straightforward, so instead we can measure the volume by displacement.

### 10. Common Laboratory Equipment: Types & Uses

Biologists use all kinds of equipment in their labs to run their experiments. In this lesson, you'll identify some of the most common pieces of equipment as well as when you should or shouldn't use them.

### 11. Laboratory Safety Techniques: Protecting People and Equipment

Laboratory safety is not fun, but following the rules ensures that lab activities can be enjoyed by everyone. In this lesson, we cover some basic lab safety rules to follow that will help lab time be both safe and fun.

### 12. Introduction to the Compound Microscope: Parts & Uses

The compound light microscope is a useful tool in any biology laboratory. In this lesson, you'll be introduced to the parts of a compound microscope, as well as understand the function of each of those parts.
