# Ch 36: MTEL Middle School Math/Science: Probability & Statistics

### About This Chapter

## MTEL Middle School Math/Science: Probability & Statistics - Chapter Summary

In this chapter are resources you can use to study for the MTEL Mathematics/Science (Middle School) assessment. Among them are video lessons that can help you brush up on probability and statistics so you're able to:

- Define descriptive and inferential statistics
- Explain the meaning of histogram in math, as well as read and interpret line graphs
- Discuss nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio measurements
- Analyze the addition and multiplication rules of probability
- Describe the elements, intersections and unions of mathematical sets
- Examine events as subsets of a sample space
- Provide insight into relative frequency and classical approaches to probability

The lessons are easy to navigate. Simply select the one you'd like to watch from the right-hand sidebar, then watch any others in the sequence you choose. You can view and review lessons as often as needed.

### MTEL Middle School Math/Science: Probability & Statistics - Chapter Objectives

The MTEL Mathematics/Science (Middle School) assessment is used to help educators fulfill their goal of teaching math and science to middle school students in Massachusetts. Earning a passing score of 240 or higher can give you the teacher licensure you need. This chapter prepares you for the test by reviewing topics covered in the data analysis, statistics and probability subarea of the test, which is found in the multiple-choice section and constitutes about 6% of the total test.

The test consists of 100 multiple-choice questions and two open-response assignments. After reviewing the lessons in this chapter, use the self-assessment quizzes to get practice with questions similar in format and content to those on the test. A chapter exam is available to reinforce concepts learned in the lessons. If you have any questions about lesson topics, submit them to our experts.

### 1. Descriptive & Inferential Statistics: Definition, Differences & Examples

Descriptive and inferential statistics each give different insights into the nature of the data gathered. One alone cannot give the whole picture. Together, they provide a powerful tool for both description and prediction.

### 2. What is a Histogram in Math? - Definition & Examples

Watch this video lesson to see how useful a histogram can be when you need to show a bunch of data in an easy to read format. Also, learn how you can easily gather the information you need from looking at a histogram.

### 3. Reading and Interpreting Line Graphs

Watch this video lesson to find out how useful line graphs can be and how much information you can gain just from looking at one. Learn how you can apply that information in your own life to help you make better decisions.

### 4. Nominal, Ordinal, Interval & Ratio Measurements: Definition & Examples

Different types of data can be grouped and measured in different ways. In this lesson, you will learn about nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio measurements.

### 5. The Addition Rule of Probability: Definition & Examples

In this lesson, you will learn the differences between mutually exclusive and non-mutually exclusive events and how to find the probabilities of each using the Addition Rule of Probability.

### 6. The Multiplication Rule of Probability: Definition & Examples

The Multiplication Rule of Probability is a concept you will use frequently when solving probability equations. In this lesson, learn the two different scenarios in which you will use the multiplication rule of probability.

### 7. Mathematical Sets: Elements, Intersections & Unions

Today we're going to explore mathematical sets, which are surprisingly simple! Sets are just collections of any objects or concepts, also known as elements, that can be related to each other through union or intersection.

### 8. Events as Subsets of a Sample Space: Definition & Example

Probability can get very confusing at times. You will find that some words, such as events and subsets, are often referring to the same concept depending on the experiment. Use this lesson to understand the concept of events as subsets.

### 9. Relative Frequency & Classical Approaches to Probability

To understand probability, it is important to understand the foundations. In this lesson, you will learn about relative frequency and the foundations of understanding probability.
