MTEL Middle School Math/Science: Ratios, Proportions & Rate of Change - Chapter Objectives
When you take the MTEL Middle School Math/Science exam, you'll be asked to complete 100 multiple-choice questions and two open-response assignments in a four-hour testing session. Eight percent of your score on this computer-based certification exam is based on your understating of number sense and operations. Some of the topics in this subarea include ratios, proportions and rates of change, topics that are discussed in this chapter. Additionally, one of the open-response items (another 10% of your score) may require you to demonstrate your knowledge ratios and proportions.

1. Proportion: Definition, Application & Examples
When we want to compare one ratio, or fraction, to another equivalent ratio, it's a proportion. Learn all about proportions and practice solving proportion problems in this lesson.

2. Ratios and Proportions: Definition and Examples
Watch this video lesson to learn how ratios and proportions are related. Also, learn how ratios and proportions are used in real life and how you can apply them to yours.

3. Solving Problems Involving Proportions: Definition and Examples
Learn how you can use proportions to find missing sides and how to increase or decrease the sizes of objects to create models of them in this video lesson.

4. Average Rate of Change: Definition, Formula & Examples
Average rate of change and slope of a line are very interconnected. They are actually one in the same. In this lesson, we will be discovering how they are interconnected.

5. Applying Scale Factors to Perimeter, Area, and Volume of Similar Figures
How do shapes change sizes yet retain their proportions and similarities to other shapes? In this lesson, we'll look at what a scale factor is and how to apply it. We'll consider scale factors with regards to three different aspects of similar shapes: perimeter, area and volume.

6. Taxes & Discounts: Calculations & Examples
When you go shopping, you don't want to be surprised by the amount of tax on an item. You also want to fully understand discounts to know how much you can save. In this lesson, we'll practice calculating both tax and discounts.

7. Using Tables and Graphs in the Real World
We use tables and graphs in algebra as ways to visually show an equation or function. But do we really use these in the real world? Is it that important to learn about tables and graphs? Find out in this video lesson.
