About This Chapter

This chapter makes it easy to study for the MTEL Mathematics/Science (Middle School) assessment. Review engaging lessons about trigonometric graphs, then reinforce what you've learned with short self-assessment quizzes.

MTEL Middle School Math/Science: Trigonometric Graphs - Chapter Summary

Gain the in-depth knowledge you need to address trigonometric graphs on the MTEL assessment. After reviewing the lessons, you will be ready for the following:

  • Understanding how to graph sine and cosine
  • Completing the process of graphing sine and cosine transformations
  • Knowing how to graph the tangent function
  • Exhibiting the steps involved in graphing the cosecant, secant and cotangent functions
  • Showing how to use graphs to determine trigonometric identity
  • Displaying how to solve a trigonometric equation graphically

Take advantage of lessons that condense weeks of class time into videos that average 10 minutes. You can benefit from quality instruction that is packaged into fun presentations with entertaining visual effects.

MTEL Middle School Math/Science: Trigonometric Graphs Objectives

Educators are required to take the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) Mathematics/Science (Middle School) assessment if they want to teach the subjects in middle school classrooms. The test gauges educators' comprehension of a variety of math and science subject areas, including geometry, trigonometry, calculus, chemistry, physics and biology. It consists of 100 multiple-choice questions and two open-response assignments. To pass, you must earn a minimum score of 240.

Topics in this chapter are found in the trigonometry, calculus and discrete mathematics subarea of the test, which is located in the multiple-choice section and constitutes about 5% of the total test. After reviewing the lessons in this chapter via video or transcript, you can take self-assessment quizzes and a chapter exam to gauge your readiness to take the test.

6 Lessons in Chapter 31: MTEL Middle School Math/Science: Trigonometric Graphs
Test your knowledge with a 30-question chapter practice test
Graphing Sine and Cosine

1. Graphing Sine and Cosine

Sine and cosine aren't just for triangles; they can also be waves. See them graphed on the unit circle and then learn how that translates into the sine and cosine waves.

Graphing Sine and Cosine Transformations

2. Graphing Sine and Cosine Transformations

What happens when we take the sine and cosine wave and transform them? They get bigger, smaller, faster and slower. Find out how in this lesson on sine and cosine wave transformations.

Graphing the Tangent Function: Amplitude, Period, Phase Shift & Vertical Shift

3. Graphing the Tangent Function: Amplitude, Period, Phase Shift & Vertical Shift

Take a look at how the graph of a tangent function and how we can transform it by making a few small changes to its equation. This video shows how to graph the original function and explains its transformations.

Graphing the Cosecant, Secant & Cotangent Functions

4. Graphing the Cosecant, Secant & Cotangent Functions

After watching this video lesson, you will learn what the graphs of the cosecant, secant, and cotangent trigonometric functions look like. You will also learn how to see if these graphs are shifted or transformed.

Using Graphs to Determine Trigonometric Identity

5. Using Graphs to Determine Trigonometric Identity

After watching this video lesson, you will be able to use graphs to determine whether an equation is a trigonometric identity or not. Learn what you need to look for to determine this.

Solving a Trigonometric Equation Graphically

6. Solving a Trigonometric Equation Graphically

How can you show someone that you have the right answer? This video lesson will show you how you can do this for a trigonometric equation. Learn what you need to watch for and how to get your answers.
