About This Chapter
NES Math: Analytical Geometry - Chapter Summary
The lessons in this chapter can refresh your understanding of ways to plot points and graph lines in analytical geometry as you study for the NES Math exam. We provide videos, quizzes and other study aids to help you tackle questions on topics including:
- The cartesian coordinate system
- The midpoint and the distance formulas
- Calculating the slope of a line
- Graphing transformations in math
- Translations in math
Each of our video lessons is five to ten minutes in length. You can watch them anytime on a computer or mobile device. Every video includes a timeline with video links back to specific portions of the lessons. A written transcript of every lesson highlights key topics and words.
NES Math: Analytical Geometry Chapter Objectives
Several states require passing the NES Mathematics exam as one condition for granting certification to teach mathematics at the secondary level. The exam is divided into five content domains, and the material from this chapter is covered in the Measurement and Geometry content domain, which accounts for 19% of the test score.
The exam consists entirely of multiple-choice questions and is computer delivered. The questions on our lesson quizzes and chapter exam are also multiple choice, so completing them can give you experience in the format you'll encounter on the test. Our quizzes also show you where you may need extra study before exam day.
1. The Cartesian Coordinate System: Plotting Points & Graphing Lines
Watch this video lesson to see how useful the Cartesian coordinate system is. Learn how points are labeled and how you can plot points and graph lines using the system.
2. How to Use The Midpoint Formula
The formula for the midpoint of a line segment will tell you how to find the middle of any line segment on the x, y plane. Learn about this formula and see how it is used to find the midpoint of a line segment.
3. How to Use The Distance Formula
You can't always rely on your smartphone to tell you how far you need to travel to get from point A to point B. The distance formula will tell you the distance between any two points on a graph. In this lesson, you'll learn where it comes from and how to use it!
4. Calculating the Slope of a Line: Point-Slope Form, Slope-Intercept Form & More
Being able to calculate the slope of a line is a very useful skill to have. Why? Watch this video lesson to find out and learn how to find the slope when working with various equations and various lines.
5. Transformations in Math: Definition & Graph
In geometry, transformation refers to the movement of objects in the coordinate plane. This lesson will define and give examples of each of the four common transformations and end with a quiz to make sure you are moving in the right direction.
6. What is Translation in Math? - Definition, Examples, & Terms
In mathematics, translation refers to moving an object without changing it in any other way. This lesson will describe how to translate an object and give some examples. A quiz will follow to test your knowledge.
