Ch 36: NES Middle Grades Math: Measurement

About This Chapter

Check out these videos for a thorough review of measurement systems, principles, and formulas. Our chapter test and lesson quizzes will help you get ready for the NES Middle Grades Mathematics exam.

NES Middle Grades Math: Measurement - Chapter Summary

In these videos, our instructors guide you through a refresher on the principal systems of measurement used today to help you complete the National Evaluation Series (NES) Middle Grades Mathematics. The lessons explore measurements of time, distance/length, mass, capacity, and weight in both metric and U.S. Customary Units systems. Additionally, these videos discuss:

  • Standard units of measurement
  • Inter-system conversions
  • Scale drawings interpretation and reading
  • Basic operations in measurement systems

Our lessons are each built around a brief, but thorough, video, accompanied by assessments to gauge understanding as well as on print materials for study aids. Our unique interface makes navigation simple, allowing you to move easily between lessons and chapters and to jump to specific content within a given video using the content tags.

NES Middle Grades Math: Measurement Chapter Objectives

The NES Middle Grades Mathematics exam is certain to include questions directly about measurement systems as well as questions where an understanding of these principles will be necessary to complete more complex content. The Measurement and Geometry content domain is worth 25% of the test content, with Objective 0007 focusing on these measurement principles and formulas.

The test includes 150 multiple-choice questions overall, tested in a 4-hour, 15-minute time limit. You must achieve the national benchmark score of 220 to pass the exam: they will let you know if you passed immediately following the exam. Your detailed score report will break down your performance by content domain and will be published a couple of weeks after the test. The detailed report will be available to you as well as the education institution and state agency you indicate during registration. Head to the NES website for more details and to complete registration.

How to Convert Standard Units of Measure

2. How to Convert Standard Units of Measure

The United States uses pounds, miles and Fahrenheit for measurements, but the rest of the world uses the metric system. This video lesson will help you to convert from one to the other easily, so you can understand kilometers and kilograms, too.

How to Perform Basic Operations with Measurements

3. How to Perform Basic Operations with Measurements

In this video lesson, you will learn how measurements are very much like variables when it comes to adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing them. You will also see examples of how they are done.

The Metric System: Units and Conversion

4. The Metric System: Units and Conversion

Just like you and your friend communicate using the same language, scientists all over the world need to use the same language when reporting the measurements they make. This language is called the metric system. In this lesson we will cover the metric units for length, mass, volume, density and temperature, and also discuss how to convert among them.

How to Convert Units in the Metric System

5. How to Convert Units in the Metric System

If you can make dinner, you can convert units in the metric system. It's that easy! In this lesson, you'll learn about the three key things you'll need to perform conversions.
