Ch 39: NES Middle Grades Math: Symmetry, Similarity & Congruence

About This Chapter

Dive into this chapter for a quick review of the geometric principles of similarity and congruence in lines and two-dimensional shapes as you prepare for the NES Middle Grades Mathematics test. Don't forget to complete the lesson quizzes and chapter exam to see how you're doing.

NES Middle Grades Math: Symmetry, Similarity & Congruence - Chapter Summary

This chapter will help you get ready for the National Evaluation Series (NES) Middle Grades Mathematics exam by explaining how to identify, construct, and analyze similar/congruent shapes and lines. You will be treated to entertaining and insightful videos from our talented instructors with lessons on such topics as:

  • Lines of symmetry
  • Congruence and similarity in geometric shapes
  • Parallel, transverse, and perpendicular lines

These video-based lessons create a single point of study for your exam preparation: there is no need to bounce among several study resources to review and practice your math skills. Watch the videos, then review the lesson transcripts and worksheets that match the multimedia presentation. Take the quizzes for a quick measure of your progress and complete the chapter test to see if you may need to return to specific lessons.

NES Middle Grades Math: Symmetry, Similarity & Congruence Objectives

There are four content domains in the NES Middle Grades Mathematics exam: this chapter falls under the Measurements and Geometry domain, which accounts for 25% of the test content. It relates especially to Objective 008, Euclidean geometry, which asks you to demonstrate an understanding of similarity and congruence, among other topics. There are 150 multiple-choice questions on the exam, which you have 4 hours and 15 minutes to complete. To pass the exam, you must score 220 on the 100-300 scaled score system.

The NES website has more information on testing centers and times. There, you will also register for the exam and retrieve your detailed score report a couple of weeks after the test. You will not have to wait that long to know if you passed, however, because they grade your exam at the testing center and provide your scaled score before you leave.

7 Lessons in Chapter 39: NES Middle Grades Math: Symmetry, Similarity & Congruence
Test your knowledge with a 30-question chapter practice test
What is a Line of Symmetry in Geometric Shapes?

1. What is a Line of Symmetry in Geometric Shapes?

After viewing this lesson, you should be able to identify shapes that have a line of symmetry in them and know how to find where this line is. A short quiz to test your knowledge will follow the lesson.

Congruence in Geometric Shapes

2. Congruence in Geometric Shapes

Watch this video lesson to learn how you can determine whether two shapes are congruent or not. You will learn what the one criterion is when determining congruency between two shapes.

Similarity in Geometric Shapes

3. Similarity in Geometric Shapes

View this lesson to learn how you can determine whether shapes are similar. Find out how to use the one rule that tells you when your two shapes are geometrically similar.

Parallel, Perpendicular and Transverse Lines

4. Parallel, Perpendicular and Transverse Lines

What are the different types of lines? Where are they visible in the real world and how can you recognize them? Find out here and test your knowledge with a quiz.

Identifying Parallel Lines in Geometric Shapes

5. Identifying Parallel Lines in Geometric Shapes

Watch this video lesson to learn how you can spot parallel lines in a rectangle, in a square, and in a parallelogram. You will learn how many pairs of parallel lines each of these shapes has.

Constructing Perpendicular Lines in Geometry

6. Constructing Perpendicular Lines in Geometry

In this video lesson, you will see how to use geometric construction to draw perpendicular lines. Learn why geometric construction is useful. Also find out the only two tools in addition to your pencil that you need to do this.

Identifying Perpendicular Lines in Geometric Shapes

7. Identifying Perpendicular Lines in Geometric Shapes

Do you know what a perpendicular line is? Do you know how to spot one in a geometric shape? This lesson will tell you how to spot perpendicular lines in squares, rectangles, triangles, and trapezoids.
