About This Chapter

The NMTA has been replaced with the National Evaluation Series (NES) test equivalent. View the video lessons in this chapter to re-familiarize yourself with the rules of estimating and rounding as you prepare for the NES Mathematics test.

NMTA Essential Academic Skills Math: Estimating & Rounding - Chapter Summary

Although mathematicians and scientists often focus on finding exact answers, there are many situations where rounding numbers or making logical estimations are essential steps for solving equations. As you study for the NES Mathematics test, go through the video lessons in this chapter to find out when you should round numbers or make estimations. By viewing these lessons, you should have a better understanding of the following topics:

  • Rounding mixed numbers
  • Rounding decimals
  • Estimating sums
  • Estimating differences
  • Making estimations by rounding

You can make the most out of your study experience by watching each of our video lessons in order. The lessons are brief but engaging, making the process more enjoyable. Reading through the lesson transcripts may also prove beneficial for memorizing keywords. All lessons have video tags that make it easier to skip around to each of the major topics. After you complete each lesson, you can challenge yourself by taking the quiz. To determine how well prepared you are for the NES Mathematics test, you can always try taking the chapter exam.

NMTA Essential Academic Skills Math: Estimating & Rounding Chapter Objectives

Mathematics teachers in New Mexico must prove their knowledge within their field by passing the NES Mathematics test. This computer-based test includes multiple-choice questions, and test-takers have a little over four hours to answer 150 questions. Some of the objectives of this test include verifying that teachers possess an understanding of mathematical theory as well as problem-solving strategies. Questions related to estimating and rounding can be found in the first of the five content domain sections for this test, and the answers given for questions in this section will account for about 19% of the total test score.
