Ch 13: NMTA Math: Inequalities
About This Chapter
NMTA Math: Inequalities - Chapter Summary
Take a look at the video lessons in this chapter to refresh your memory of solving problems that involve inequalities. By studying these engaging and brief videos, you should be able to do the following on the NMTA Mathematics test:
- Define and recognize inequalities
- Solve linear inequalities
- Graph one- and two-variable inequalities
- Distinguish between compound inequalities and systems of inequalities
- Solve and graph absolute value inequalities
- Graph and solve quadratic inequalities
Leave it to our professional instructors to teach you step-by-step the rules and techniques used to work with inequalities. The videos, which you can watch on your mobile device, are usually less than 10 minutes long and contain practice problems with simplified explanations.
Objectives of the NMTA Math: Inequalities Chapter
A requirement for earning licensure as a math teacher in New Mexico is passing the NMTA Mathematics test. Its questions cover five content areas, ranging from number theory to calculus. Comprising 24% of your total score, the content domain on patterns, algebra and functions is the largest; it also includes problems dealing with inequalities like those covered in this chapter.
The NMTA Mathematics test is in a computer-based, multiple-choice format. After watching our videos, take the lesson quizzes to get practice answering the types of questions you'll come across on the exam.

1. What is an Inequality?
Deciding how to spend your money can be a tricky thing. Should you save it, invest it, or enjoy it? Learn how inequalities can help you make your decision!

2. Solving Linear Inequalities: Practice Problems
Linear inequalities may look intimidating, but they're really not much different than linear equations. In this lesson, we'll practice solving a variety of linear inequalities.

3. How to Graph 1- and 2-Variable Inequalities
So an inequality is just an equation with a less than or greater than symbol. But what is the difference between 1 and 2 variable inequalities? What does have a greater than or equal to symbol change? When do you use a number line instead of a coordinate plane? Get those answers here!

4. Set Notation, Compound Inequalities, and Systems of Inequalities
In this lesson, we'll explore the conditions of compound inequalities and learn how to express them using set notation and interval notation. Test you knowledge afterward with a short quiz.

5. The Absolute-Value Inequality: Definition & Example
After watching this video lesson, you will be able to solve absolute value inequalities. Learn how you can easily set up your problem to successfully solve your problem each and every time.

6. How to Solve and Graph an Absolute Value Inequality
Taking two skills and combining them to make a more complicated problem is a classic tactic in mathematics. If you feel confident with absolute values and inequalities, see if you can tackle them with their powers combined here!

7. Graphing & Solving Quadratic Inequalities: Examples & Process
When you finish watching this video lesson, you will be able to graph and solve your own quadratic inequality. Learn what steps you need to take and what to watch for.

8. Graphing a System of Quadratic Inequalities: Examples & Process
What is a system of quadratic inequalities? What are the steps to graphing them? Find the answers to these questions by watching this video lesson. When you finish, you will be able to graph these yourself.
