# Ch 8: NMTA Math: Vector Operations

### About This Chapter

## NMTA Math: Vector Operations - Chapter Summary

In preparation for the NMTA Mathematics test, let our professional instructors refresh and improve your skills in performing operations with vectors. Once you've made your way through the lessons, you should be able to do the following:

- Identify types of vectors
- Perform vector addition and subtraction
- Calculate the resultant of vectors
- Use scalar multiplication with vectors

Our lessons are a fun and convenient way to review for the NMTA exam. They contain several examples and step-by-step explanations of problem-solving methods. The videos, along with transcripts and quizzes, go where you do as long as you have a mobile device.

### Objectives of the NMTA Math: Vector Operations Chapter

The NMTA Mathematics test, taken as part of New Mexico math teacher licensing requirements, contains 150 questions within five content areas. The vector concepts found in this chapter are included in the statistics, probability and discrete math section of the exam, which makes up roughly 19% of your score. Outside of this category, your skills in mathematical processes, algebra, geometry and trigonometry will be assessed.

Our lessons' self-assessment quizzes are in a multiple-choice format, as are the questions on the computerized NMTA Mathematics test. Taking the quizzes gives you practice in answering such questions in a computer-based environment.

### 1. What Is a Vector? - Definition & Types

After watching this lesson, you will be able to explain what vectors are in physics, give some examples of vectors and have a basic idea of how they can be manipulated mathematically. A short quiz will follow.

### 2. Vector Addition (Geometric Approach): Explanation & Examples

After watching this video, you will be able to explain why we might need to add two vectors and, given magnitudes and directions, add two vectors using geometric methods. A short quiz will follow.

### 3. Vector Subtraction (Geometric): Formula & Examples

After watching this lesson, you will be able to subtract vectors geometrically and give examples of how that process might be used in physics. A short quiz will follow.

### 4. Resultants of Vectors: Definition & Calculation

After watching this video, you will be able to explain what a resultant of a vector is and use mathematics to calculate the resultant of two vectors. A short quiz will follow.

### 5. Scalar Multiplication of Vectors: Definition & Calculations

After watching this video, you will be able to explain what scalar multiplication is and complete basic calculations involving the scalar multiplication of vectors. A short quiz will follow.
