NMTA Middle Grades Math: Negative Numbers - Chapter Objectives

New Mexico educators who wish to teach math to middle grades students must pass the NMTA Middle Grades Mathematics test to comply with licensure requirements for the state. Individuals will have a little over four hours to demonstrate their extensive field of knowledge concerning mathematics topics appropriate to this age group. All of the 150 questions will be presented in a multiple-choice format through a computer testing system. There are four key mathematics areas addressed within this test, including geometry and measurements, probability and statistics, algebra, and number sense. Although questions specifically about negative numbers may only be addressed in the number sense section, which comprises 17% of the exam, all sections may have equations that include negative numbers, so you will need to understand how negative numbers affect each type of equation if you wish to do well on this test.
