Ch 3: NMTA Middle Grades Math: Properties of Numbers

About This Chapter

The state of New Mexico has replaced the NMTA Middle Grades Mathematics with an NES exam. As you study for the NES Middle Grade Mathematics test, be sure to review the material of this chapter to improve your understanding of commutative properties, multiplication properties, associative properties and other properties of numbers used in mathematics.

NES Middle Grades Mathematics: Properties of Numbers - Chapter Summary

In this chapter, you can review some of the important properties of numbers used when solving mathematical operations as part of your preparation for the NES Middle Grades Mathematics. Watch the series of videos in this chapter to prepare for questions about the:

  • Commutative property
  • Multiplication property of zero
  • Distributive property
  • Associative property
  • Properties of equality

After reviewing the lessons, complete the corresponding quizzes to improve your understanding of the information and determine what topics you don't quite understand. Use video tags to go directly to the areas of the lessons that discuss your topics of weakness so that you can reinforce your mastery over them. For an alternative review of the material, you can also read over the lesson transcripts.

NES Middle Grades Mathematics: Properties of Numbers Chapter Objectives

Individuals take the NES Middle Grades Mathematics to demonstrate their mastery over mathematics and earn certification as a math teacher of the middle grades. When you take this exam, you must complete 150 multiple-choice questions in a four hour and 15 minute testing session. You can expect 17% of these questions to be part of the Number Sense and Operations domain; this section may include questions about operational properties. Use the activities of this chapter to improve your understanding of these properties so that you can answer these questions in an accurate and timely manner on test day.

The Commutative Property: Definition and Examples

1. The Commutative Property: Definition and Examples

There are three major properties that deal with the addition and multiplication of numbers. One of those properties is the commutative property. This lesson will define and give examples of the commutative property and how it works.

The Multiplication Property of Zero: Definition & Examples

2. The Multiplication Property of Zero: Definition & Examples

The number zero has different rules than other numbers; it behaves according to it's own unique properties. This lesson will define the multiplication property of zero and give some examples of how it works.

Distributive Property: Definition, Use & Examples

3. Distributive Property: Definition, Use & Examples

After completing this lesson, you will be able to state the distributive property and apply it to various types of problems. You will also be able to accurately perform the mathematical operations that are involved with the distributive property.

The Associative Property: Definition and Examples

4. The Associative Property: Definition and Examples

There are three basic number properties that help to form the backbone of algebra. One of those properties is the associative property. This lesson will define the associative property and give some examples of how it works.

Addition Property of Equality: Definition & Example
