# Ch 43: NMTA Middle Grades Math: Similar Polygons

### About This Chapter

## NMTA Middle Grades Math: Similar Polygons - Chapter Summary

Do you want to recall the geometric properties and theorems associated with triangles and other shapes? Then you need to look over the video lessons in this chapter to find out more about polygons. Preparing for the NMTA Middle Grades Mathematics test can be a stressful process, so let our study guide materials help you get reacquainted with the following:

- Answering problems about proportions and ratios
- Finding the geometric mean
- The AA Criterion
- The transitive property of similar triangles
- Building similar polygons
- Theorems about proportionality

If you haven't taken courses in geometry since your early years in college, you might need to brush up on these theorems and formulas related to polygons. The materials in our chapter have been created specifically to help you go over these less familiar topics. Our user-friendly site lets you quickly jump from one video lesson to the next. By scrolling down a bit past the videos, you can explore the lesson transcripts, which include all the major terms and concepts in bold letters. Many of these bolded terms are hyperlinked to take you to related lessons for additional study. Getting ready for the NMTA Middle Grades Mathematics test is easier than ever now with our study guide available on pretty much all of your online devices.

### NMTA Middle Grades Math: Similar Polygons Objectives

The purpose of this assessment is for New Mexico educators to demonstrate their full field of knowledge within mathematics. You should know, however, that this test is an optional part of the licensure process. This test allows New Mexico teachers who are licensed to teach students in grades K-8 to verify their content-based knowledge within this specific field. The NMTA Middle Grades Mathematics test measures the extent of an individual's knowledge by asking 150 questions about algebra, geometry, probability, and number sense. The lessons in this chapter should re-familiarize you with some of the foundational concepts within geometry, which you will need to know, since a quarter of the entire test is made up of geometry-based questions.

### 1. Ratios and Proportions: Definition and Examples

Watch this video lesson to learn how ratios and proportions are related. Also, learn how ratios and proportions are used in real life and how you can apply them to yours.

### 2. Geometric Mean: Definition and Formula

Watch this video lesson to learn how different the geometric mean is from the arithmetic mean, or average, that we are all so familiar with. Learn in what circumstance the geometric mean is preferred. Also, learn the formula and how to use it.

### 3. Solving Problems Involving Proportions: Definition and Examples

Learn how you can use proportions to find missing sides and how to increase or decrease the sizes of objects to create models of them in this video lesson.

### 4. Similar Polygons: Definition and Examples

Watch this video to learn what makes two polygons similar to each other. You'll also learn the one distinguishing aspect of similar polygons and see an example of how to compare two polygons.

### 5. Similar Triangles & the AA Criterion

This video lesson explains the AA criterion and shows you why you only need two corresponding angles to be equal for two triangles to be similar. You will also see how you can use it to help you identify similar triangles.

### 6. The Transitive Property of Similar Triangles

Watch this video lesson and you will understand what the transitive property is and how it applies to similar triangles. Watch as we apply the transitive property to three similar triangles.

### 7. Triangle Proportionality Theorem

Watch this video lesson to learn all about the triangle proportionality theorem and how you can use this interesting theorem to help you solve problems. Learn how a parallel line can create sides that are proportional to each other.

### 8. Constructing Similar Polygons

This lesson will teach you how to construct similar polygons, which are very useful in many quantitative fields. You'll learn that all of this has something to do with, of all things, snowflakes!

### 9. Properties of Right Triangles: Theorems & Proofs

In this lesson, you will learn about the properties of and theorems associated with right triangles, which have a wide range of applications in math and science. Specifically, we will discuss and prove the Pythagorean theorem and the right triangle altitude theorem. Let's get started.
