NMTA Reading: Using Reading Assessment Data Chapter Objectives
The NMTA Reading: Using Reading Assessment Data chapter is designed to give you the resources you need to fully prepare for questions related to this subject on the exam. The test is broken into four subareas. The topics in this chapter are found in Subarea I, which explores planning, managing and organizing reading instruction based on ongoing assessment. It constitutes approximately 27% of the total test.
Most educator licenses in New Mexico require this assessment before enabling educators to teach reading in the classroom. The test is composed of 100 selected-response questions and requires a passing score of 240. Gain practice with questions formatted similarly to those on the test by taking the short quiz with each lesson, as well as the chapter exam. You can submit any questions you have about a lesson topic to expert coaches and tutors.
1. Summarizing Assessment Results: Understanding Basic Statistics of Score Distribution
Summarizing test results is a critical component of the assessment process. In order for results to be used effectively, they must be summarized in a way that allows educators to compare the achievement of one student to others. This lesson will describe the first step in summarizing results: understanding the basic statistics of score distribution.

This lesson focuses on classroom assessment, but instead of different types of assessment (such as essay versus true/false questions), we'll discuss statistical methods for summarizing scores on any form of testing. Assessment results allow educators to make important decisions about students' knowledge, abilities and future educational potential. There are multiple ways to summarize and interpret assessment results. This lesson will discuss ways to summarize norm-referenced assessments and criterion-referenced assessments.

This lesson introduces the signs and symptoms often displayed by early elementary age students who are having difficulty with reading. Specific signs at each grade level are identified and discussed.
6. Learning Disabilities: How to Identify Children with a Learning Disability
Identifying children with a learning disability can be tricky because it can be confused with a lack of interest in a school subject. In this lesson, we will look at how learning disabilities can be identified and the three most common learning disabilities: dyscalculia, dysgraphia and dyslexia.
7. Reading Programs for Students With Special Needs
Teaching students with disabilities presents many challenges, mostly because of the diversity of your learners. When creating or selecting a reading program, it is important that teachers understand the most important areas of reading instruction.
8. Observing Reading Behaviors in Students
You can learn so much about a child by watching him or her read. This lesson will give you some ideas about how to observe students' reading behaviors and what to do with what you learn via these observations.
9. Involving Family & Other Professionals in Child Assessments
In this lesson, we will look at the kinds of professionals who might be involved in child assessments and how to encourage the family to participate in the ongoing assessment of their children.
