NYSTCE English Language Arts: The Pre-Writing Process Objectives
The writing portion of the multiple-choice section constitutes about 22% of the exam. Demonstrate competencies in the following areas:
- Pre-writing strategies: clustering, brainstorming and using additional graphic organizers
- Note-taking and draft development
- Use of pertinent details for main point development
- Elimination of non-related details or personal bias
- Strong text organization, with introduction and conclusion
- Use of technology in writing
In addition to approximately 90 multiple-choice questions, your test will also include a written, constructed-response essay that composes about ten percent of the test.

There are three types of appeals that you can use in your persuasive writing to make your arguments more effective. In this video, you'll learn about logical, ethical, and emotional appeals as well as how to use them.

6. Basic Essay Structure: The Five-Paragraph Essay
Working with an established essay structure provides writers with the necessary elements of a successful essay. In this lesson, we'll work through the drafting process for the five-paragraph essay and make note of important dos and don'ts.
7. Essay Introduction: Write a Thesis and Capture Your Audience
We'll look at the importance of the introductory paragraph and engaging your audience through the use of attention getters, a bridge, and an arguable thesis. Three of the most common attention getters are specifically defined, and examples are provided in this lesson.
8. How to Write a Strong Essay Body
This video will show you how to achieve unified, coherent body paragraphs in your essays. By creating well-developed body paragraphs, your essays will be cleaner, sharper and earn you a better grade!
9. How to Write and Use Transition Sentences
Like a road map, transitions guide readers through your essay. This lesson examines the way writers transition between sentences, within paragraphs and between paragraphs to make for a smooth reading experience.
10. Practicing Essay Writing to Get Better at Writing
It can be tough to practice your essay-writing skills on your own without a teacher's feedback. With some time and practice (and by using this game plan), you'll be on your way to practicing, evaluating and improving your writing.
