Ch 14: OAE Mathematics: Absolute Value

About This Chapter

When preparing to take the OAE Mathematics test, complete the activities of this chapter to improve your understanding of absolute value, including the absolute values of equations and graphs of absolute values.

OAE Mathematics: Absolute Value - Chapter Summary

Before you take the Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) Mathematics test, watch the lesson videos of this chapter to improve your understanding of absolute values of real numbers and equations. These videos are taught by expert instructors who will help you review these topics and are available to answer any questions you may have so that you can answer questions on:

  • Absolute values of real numbers
  • Graphing absolute values and transformations
  • Graphs of absolute value equations

Reinforce your comprehension of the material presented in these videos by completing the corresponding quizzes. Use the results from your lesson quizzes to find areas you don't understand, then fortify your mastery of these areas by returning to the lesson videos. Use video tags to go directly to the areas of the lessons that explain the topics you don't understand. For an alternative way of going through the material, try reading the lesson transcripts that give you a written overview of the material presented in the chapter.

OAE Mathematics: Absolute Value Chapter Objectives

Educators in the state of Ohio take the OAE Mathematics to demonstrate their mastery over the field of mathematics. This certification exam is a computer-based test with 150 multiple-choice questions. On test day, you will be asked to complete these questions in a four hour and 15 minute testing session. Twenty-four percent of the questions are part of the patterns, algebra and functions domain, and some of these questions could ask you to work with absolute values. The lesson videos, transcripts and quizzes of this chapter have been compiled to aid in your review of absolute value so that you will be able to answer related questions in an accurate and timely manner.

What is an Absolute Value?

1. What is an Absolute Value?

When we're talking and comparing numbers, we often don't care whether its positive or negative, just how big it is. This is often called the magnitude of a number and we find it by taking the absolute value. Learn all about it here!

Finding the Absolute Value of a Real Number

2. Finding the Absolute Value of a Real Number

You can find the absolute value of any real number. This lesson will define absolute value, explain what real numbers are and give the steps to finding the absolute value of any real number.

Solving Absolute Value Practice Problems

3. Solving Absolute Value Practice Problems

There are many easy mistakes to make when solving absolute value equations. Learn how to avoid those mistakes here by working on examples of absolute value equations with operations on the inside and the outside of the absolute value.

How to Graph an Absolute Value and Do Transformations

4. How to Graph an Absolute Value and Do Transformations

Absolute value graphs normally look like the letter 'V', but transformations can change that 'V' in a number of different ways. As well as teaching you how to graph absolute values, this video will focus on a specific group of transformations called translations. Learn all about what that means here!

Graphing Absolute Value Equations: Dilations & Reflections

5. Graphing Absolute Value Equations: Dilations & Reflections

Although a basic absolute value graph isn't complicated, transformations can make them sufficiently confusing! In this lesson, you'll practice different transformations of absolute value graphs.
