Ch 27: ORELA Middle Grades Math: Basic Algebraic Expressions

About This Chapter

Prepare for the ORELA Middle Grades Math exam with the video lessons and quizzes in this course that cover the functions of algebraic expressions. You will learn various mathematical properties and how to write, evaluate, and simplify algebraic expressions in anticipation of related questions that may appear on the exam.

ORELA Middle Grades Math: Basic Algebraic Expressions - Chapter Summary

Use these lessons to review basic algebraic expressions and their properties, and then use your knowledge to practice simplifying and combining like terms. The short video lessons in this chapter cover the following subjects:

  • Variables
  • Writing algebraic expressions
  • Evaluating algebraic expressions
  • The Commutative and Associative Properties
  • The Distributive Property
  • Combining like terms
  • Simplifying algebraic expressions

Each of the lessons in this chapter includes a 5-10 minute video that can help you prepare for the ORELA Middle Grades Math exam. The videos are taught by experienced instructors who use graphics and examples to present key concepts. You can also use the multiple-choice quizzes to test your understanding and prepare for test day.

ORELA Middle Grades Math: Basic Algebraic Expressions Objectives

The ORELA Middle Grades Mathematics exam is a computer-based licensing exam designed for those who plan to teach basic math at the middle school level in Oregon. The math test is four hours and fifteen minutes long and includes multiple-choice questions that cover four content areas. Questions on algebraic expressions can be included with the algebra and functions content area; these questions make up about 33% of the test questions.

For this portion of the exam, make sure that you've reviewed strategies for manipulating algebraic equations through simplification and for solving linear and non-linear equations. Prepare for this test using our lessons and self-assessment quizzes to get a better understanding of the types of algebra questions you may see on the test.

What is a Variable in Algebra?

1. What is a Variable in Algebra?

Did you ever encounter something like a + b = c and wonder how all these letters snuck into a math problem? In this lesson, we'll learn about variables, as well as other parts of equations, constants and coefficients.

Expressing Relationships as Algebraic Expressions

2. Expressing Relationships as Algebraic Expressions

What do you do when you don't know what a number is but you do know how it relates to something else? You use an algebraic expression. In this lesson, we'll learn how to express relationships as algebraic expressions.

Evaluating Simple Algebraic Expressions

3. Evaluating Simple Algebraic Expressions

In this lesson, we'll learn how to evaluate algebraic expressions, which involves substituting numbers for variables and following the order of operations. By the end of the lesson, you'll be an algebraic expression expert.

The Commutative and Associative Properties and Algebraic Expressions

4. The Commutative and Associative Properties and Algebraic Expressions

The order of operations is important and useful, but a few mathematical properties highlight cases where order doesn't matter. In this lesson, we'll learn about the commutative and associative properties, which may save you time and effort.

The Distributive Property and Algebraic Expressions

5. The Distributive Property and Algebraic Expressions

The order of operations is great. But sometimes we need to bend the rules to simplify an equation. Fortunately, the distributive property gives us a scenario in which this is okay. Learn all about it in this lesson.

Combining Like Terms in Algebraic Expressions

6. Combining Like Terms in Algebraic Expressions

When you have an algebraic expression that's much too long, it would be great if you could simplify it. That's when knowing how to combine like terms comes in. In this lesson, we'll learn the process of combining like terms and practice simplifying expressions.

Practice Simplifying Algebraic Expressions

7. Practice Simplifying Algebraic Expressions

In this lesson, we'll practice simplifying a variety of algebraic expressions. We'll use two key concepts, combining like terms and the distributive property, to help us simplify.
