# Ch 16: ORELA Middle Grades Math: Percents

### About This Chapter

## ORELA Middle Grades Math: Percents - Chapter Summary

These lessons review the definition of percents and how to solve math problems that include them. Review the videos and then use your knowledge to practice converting percents to decimals, decimal notation, fractions and fraction notation. The short video lessons in this chapter cover the following subjects:

- Overview of percents
- Converting from percents to decimals
- Converting between percent and fractions
- Changing decimals to percents or fractions
- Converting fractions and fractional notations
- Solving problems that include percents

Each of the lessons in this chapter includes a short video taught by an experienced instructor who uses graphics and examples to present key math concepts. You can also use the multiple-choice quizzes at the end of each lesson and the end-of-chapter test to assess your understanding and prepare for test day.

### ORELA Middle Grades Math: Percents Objectives

The ORELA Middle Grades Mathematics exam is a computer-based licensing exam designed to assess the skills of those who are seeking a credential to teach basic math to middle school students. The 255-minute test includes 150 multiple-choice questions on four main content areas: numbers sense and operations; algebra and functions; measurement and geometry; and statistics, probability and discrete math.

This chapter prepares you for questions that may be included within the number sense and operations area, which makes up 17% of all test questions. For this portion of the exam, make sure that you've reviewed strategies for solving a variety of problems that use percents, decimals and fractions. Prepare for this test by using our lessons and self-assessment quizzes to get a better understanding of the types of percent questions you may see on the test.

### 1. What is a Percent? - Definition & Examples

Thinking in terms of pizza is an excellent way to think about percentages. Learn how it can help you understand percentages in this video lesson. You will also learn about the uses of percentages in the real world.

### 2. Converting from Percent Notation to Decimal Notation

Knowing how to convert a percent to a decimal can be a useful skill in many different situations. This lesson will show you how to perform that conversion and places where this skill will be helpful.

### 3. Converting Percent Notation to Fraction Notation

The process of converting percents to fractions is quite easy if you know where to start. This lesson will show you how to perform the conversion and give some real-world examples.

### 4. Changing Between Decimals and Percents

Watch as we go on a rollercoaster ride in changing from a decimal to percent and then back again. Learn to master this technique so you can get as fast as a rollercoaster going downhill on tests and quizzes when you have to convert between the two.

### 5. Changing Between Decimals and Fractions

In this video lesson, you will learn about the usefulness of knowing how to change quickly between decimals and fractions. You will also learn how changing from a decimal to a fraction is different than changing from a fraction to a decimal.

### 6. Converting Fractions to Percents & Back

After watching this video lesson, you will learn how to turn any fraction into a percent and vice versa. You will learn how they are related and how to write your answers properly.

### 7. Converting Fractions to Percents

There are times when it is important to know how to convert a fraction to a percent. Fortunately, the steps to perform this conversion are not difficult. This lesson will show you those steps and give some examples.

### 8. Solve Problems Using Percents

Percents are your friend. Think of all the cool things percents do for you. They save you money, and they tell you how well you are doing in school. Learn how you can solve problems with percents in this video lesson.

### 9. How to Solve Word Problems That Use Percents

100 percent of percent problems can be solved if we follow the correct steps. In this lesson, we'll practice solving a variety of different percent problems.
