# Ch 8: ORELA Middle Grades Math: Scientific Notation

### About This Chapter

## ORELA Middle Grades Math: Scientific Notation - Chapter Summary

Understanding scientific notation is important for completing higher-order math problems. As you prepare for the exam, we'll help you brush off the cobwebs of scientific notation with these short lessons on:

- The definition of scientific notation
- Converting numbers
- Scientific notation: making comparisons

Each lesson comes complete with an engaging and informative video. A transcript of the lecture is provided therein. The instructors are all experienced mathematics educators who know just what you'll be going through with these kinds of licensure exams. Use the quizzes after each lesson and the end-of-chapter test to get an idea of what kind of questions you will see on the big day and to get general test-taking practice.

### ORELA Middle Grades Math: Scientific Notation Chapter Objectives

The ORELA Middle Grades Mathematics exam is one of several subject matter tests available to educators seeking licensure in the Oregon public school system. The test is proctored over 4 hours and 15 minutes, is entirely computer based, and includes 150 multiple-choice questions. You will have an on-screen calculator to use when needed, but you cannot take any personal notes or digital devices into the testing area.

The material in this chapter will fall principally in the Number Sense and Operations content domain, which includes competencies 0001 and 0002 and accounts for 17% of the overall test content. We have designed these lessons to help you get relevant, useful, and memorable review on the topic of scientific notation. The idea is to boost your competencies so you can to get your best-possible score. To pass, you will need to get a 225 on the 100-300 score scale. You will be given your scaled score immediately after the test, but the two official score reports will take about two weeks to arrive.

### 1. Scientific Notation: Definition and Examples

Scientific notation is a special way of writing numbers so they are easier to work with. This lesson will define scientific notations and show some examples of how to convert numbers from standard notation to scientific notation and back.

### 2. Converting Numbers to Scientific Notation

After watching this video lesson, you will be able to convert any number you come across into scientific notation. You will also learn why scientific notation is used and where you are most likely to see it.

### 3. Comparing Numbers Written in Scientific Notation

After watching this video lesson, you will be able to compare numbers written in scientific notation with each other. You will learn how to tell which is larger and which is smaller.
