Praxis II Early Childhood Education: Geometry - Chapter Summary

If you'll be taking the Praxis II Early Childhood Education Content Knowledge test, you're likely to come across questions about geometry. This corresponding chapter of ours will guide you through all the basic fundamentals of geometry. You can view our lessons as videos or read their text transcripts. The videos are created by our expert math instructors, and they're fun and engaging. You can fit them into breaks throughout your busy day because they're brief. While short, they're also succinct and thorough in their discussion of topics that include but are not limited to:

  • Angles, properties and postulates of geometric shapes
  • Formulas for 2- and 3-dimensional shapes
  • Analyzing math problems using geometry
  • Solving basic word problems in geometry

You'll find a short quiz at the end of each lesson. Use these to identify any areas that need more review or to prove to yourself you're ready for the next topic.

Objectives for the Praxis Early Childhood Education: Geometry Chapter

Many States use Praxis II testing for certification or endorsement of aspiring early childhood educators. This is a computer-based test of approximately 120 questions that you must complete within 2 hours. The test is subdivided into six content categories; one of which is Mathematics and accounts for about 25% of the test.

The math section will assess your familiarity with the relationships between 2- and 3-dimensional shapes and their properties as well as transformation and symmetry. It's important to note that the aim of the test is to evaluate your understanding of how children of early childhood and elementary age learn math, rather than just your ability to solve math problems. So as you're reviewing geometry, keep in mind how a child of the age you'll be teaching would be comprehending and using this knowledge.
