Ch 12: Praxis Earth & Space Sciences: Earthquakes

About This Chapter

Let us show you what causes earthquakes and how scientists study them. These video lessons and quizzes will help you answer questions about earthquakes on the Praxis Earth and Space Sciences test.

Praxis Earth and Space Sciences: Earthquakes - Chapter Summary

The video lessons in this chapter will help you understand the causes of earthquakes and the destruction that results. Other lessons look at the tools scientists use to assess what's going on beneath our planet's surface when an earthquake occurs. Information in this chapter will help you prepare for questions on these topics on the Praxis Earth and Space Sciences test:

  • Definition and history of earthquakes
  • Causes of earthquakes
  • Identifying the source of an earthquake
  • Aftershocks and foreshocks
  • Using the Richter scale to measure earthquake strength
  • Using seismic waves to study earthquakes
  • Destruction caused by earthquakes

You will get a solid foundation on the causes, impact and study of earthquakes in these engaging video lessons. Experienced instructors guide you through each topic, and the self-assessment quizzes allow you to check your knowledge at the conclusion of each lesson.

Objectives of the Praxis Earth and Space Sciences: Earthquakes Course

Passing the appropriate Praxis tests is a requirement for teacher licensing in many states. The Praxis Earth and Space Sciences exam assesses competency to teach this subject at a secondary school level. This test has 100 multiple-choice questions, and you are allotted two hours to complete it. It can be administered on paper or on the computer.

The Praxis Earth and Space Sciences exam is divided into six sections, and the questions on earthquakes are in section II, Tectonics and Internal Earth Processes. This section contains 18-22 questions, which comprises 18-22% of the entire test.

What is an Earthquake? - Definition and Components

1. What is an Earthquake? - Definition and Components

Earthquakes are well known for the damage and destruction they leave behind. But what is an earthquake? In this video lesson you will learn about what causes earthquakes and the various components involved in these powerful natural disasters.

The Causes of Earthquakes

2. The Causes of Earthquakes

In this video lesson you will learn what causes earthquakes and where they occur. You will also understand the theory of elastic rebound, and how this relates to movement of the earth's crust.

Aftershocks & Foreshocks of an Earthquake

3. Aftershocks & Foreshocks of an Earthquake

An earthquake is not an isolated event of ground shaking. Foreshocks and aftershocks occur with most earthquakes, and in this video lesson you will learn about them and how they are part of the overall process.

Using the Richter Scale to Measure Earthquakes

4. Using the Richter Scale to Measure Earthquakes

In this video lesson, you will learn about earthquake magnitude and how it is measured. You will also learn how that relates to the amount of energy released during an earthquake, as well as how common different magnitude earthquakes are around the world.

Identifying and Understanding Earthquakes Using Seismic Activity

5. Identifying and Understanding Earthquakes Using Seismic Activity

Scientists can learn a lot about earthquakes by studying how they move ground. Using seismic activity, we can learn where an earthquake originated as well as how strong it was. In this video lesson, you will learn about seismic activity and how it relates to our understanding of earthquakes.

Destruction Caused by Earthquakes

6. Destruction Caused by Earthquakes

Earthquakes are well-known for their damage and destruction, and in this video lesson you will learn about the different types of damage that these dangerous natural disasters can cause.
