Praxis Mathematics: Quadratic Equations and Functions - Chapter Summary

Brush up your knowledge and skills working with quadratic equations and functions. Reviewing could be as simple as watching engaging, informative video lessons and taking the self-assessment quizzes that follow each lesson. In these lessons, instructors go over topics that include:

  • Complete the square to change the form of a quadratic equation
  • How to factor quadratic equations: FOIL in reverse
  • How to solve a quadratic equation by factoring
  • How to solve quadratics that are not in standard form
  • Quadratic functions: x and y intercepts
  • Solving quadratic equations when one side is a perfect square
  • Solving quadratics by assigning the greatest common factor and multiplication property of zero
  • What is a quadratic equation?

Our video instructors use clear, everyday language and examples to help make the material easier for you to understand and remember.

Praxis Mathematics: Objectives

The Praxis Math exam determines your readiness to be licensed as a secondary-school math teacher. The exam looks at your abilities in mathematical problem solving, reasoning, and related areas that demonstrate your knowledge of fundamental mathematical concepts and ability to teach these concepts to students.

The math exam includes 50 questions, all multiple choice. Quadratic equations and functions are likely to come up on the functions portion of the test, which makes up about eight questions, or 16%, of the exam. Quadratic functions may also come up in the data analysis and statistics portion, which makes up 5-6 questions, or about 10-12%, of the exam.

After every video lesson, you can take a self-assessment quiz. As you complete each lesson, use the quiz to see how well you remember the material you just reviewed. These quizzes allow you to gain experience with the kind of multiple-choice questions you find on the Praxis exam.

What is a Quadratic Equation? - Definition & Examples

1. What is a Quadratic Equation? - Definition & Examples

You might be surprised to learn that quadratic equations are an important part of the world we live in. We sometimes even make use of them for our entertainment! Watch this video lesson to learn more about these equations.

How to Factor Quadratic Equations: FOIL in Reverse

2. How to Factor Quadratic Equations: FOIL in Reverse

So, you know how to multiply binomials with the FOIL method, but can you do it backwards? That's exactly what factoring is, and it can be pretty tricky. Check out this lesson to learn a method that will allow you to factor quadratic trinomials with a leading coefficient of 1.

How to Solve a Quadratic Equation by Factoring

3. How to Solve a Quadratic Equation by Factoring

If your favorite video game, 'Furious Fowls,' gave you the quadratic equation for each shot you made, would you be able to solve the equation to make sure every one hit its target? If not, you will after watching this video!

How to Solve Quadratics with Complex Numbers as the Solution

4. How to Solve Quadratics with Complex Numbers as the Solution

When you solve a quadratic equation with the quadratic formula and get a negative on the inside of the square root, what do you do? The short answer is that you use an imaginary number. For the longer, more helpful answer, check out this lesson!

How to Solve Quadratics That Are Not in Standard Form

5. How to Solve Quadratics That Are Not in Standard Form

It isn't always the case that your equation will be set up nicely for you to solve. In this lesson, learn how to factor or use the quadratic formula to solve quadratic equations, even when they are not in standard form.

Discriminant: Definition & Explanation

6. Discriminant: Definition & Explanation

The discriminant helps you to solve quadratic equations. In this lesson, you will learn how to identify the discriminant and how to use it to help you find the number of solutions in a quadratic equation.
