Ch 30: Praxis Middle School Science: Cell Reproduction & Division

About This Chapter

If you need some help reviewing cell reproduction and division to get ready for the Praxis Middle School Science test, our expert instructors have created video lessons with you in mind. The quizzes after each lesson will help you be certain you're ready for the actual test.

Praxis Middle School Science: Cell Reproduction & Division - Chapter Summary

Feeling a little rusty on cell reproduction and division? Or do you feel somewhat confident and just want to be sure you're ready for the related Praxis Middle School Science test questions? We can help in either situation. Our video lessons are brief but succinct and easy to navigate. You can jump through them to skip over anything you don't need to review or you can watch them in entirety - as many times as you need. The topics covered in these lessons include:

  • Review of the genome
  • Structure of chromosomes
  • Packaging of DNA and chromosomes
  • The cell cycle, nondisjunction and aneuploidy
  • Mitosis and meiosis: important structures and phases
  • Cytokinesis in animal and plant cells
  • Asexual and sexual reproduction
  • Stem cell properties and uses

The short quizzes following each lesson are a great way to identify any weak spots or boost your confidence in your preparation for test day.

Objectives of the Praxis Middle School Science: Cell Reproduction & Division Chapter

Most States use the Praxis Middle School Science test to assess whether aspiring teachers are ready for certification. This test is computer-based and the 125 questions are divided into 6 major sections. Cell reproduction and division is covered on the life sciences section, which constitutes 24% of the exam. Our instructors chose topics to cover based on the objectives of the exam, which are indicated by the creators of the Praxis test to include understanding of the key features and functions of the cell cycle, mitosis, meiosis, cytokinesis, asexual reproduction and sexual reproduction.

10 Lessons in Chapter 30: Praxis Middle School Science: Cell Reproduction & Division
Test your knowledge with a 30-question chapter practice test
Basic Genetics: The Genome & Chromosomes

1. Basic Genetics: The Genome & Chromosomes

There are approximately 3 billion bases in the human genome. In this lesson, you'll learn more about the genome and its organization into chromosomes. We think about DNA often as the blueprint for life, but we can also think of it as the recipe for life with the nucleus being the library.

Chromosomes: Structure & Physical Features

2. Chromosomes: Structure & Physical Features

You've probably heard about chromosomes before, but how much do you truly know about them? This lesson will discuss their structure and features and will go over all of the vocabulary you need to know to be a chromosome expert!

How is DNA Packaged? - Chromosome Condensation & Karyograms

3. How is DNA Packaged? - Chromosome Condensation & Karyograms

Learn how DNA packaging makes it possible to fit approximately seven feet of DNA inside a single cell. You'll see how chromosome condensation helps cells get ready for cell division.

The Cell Cycle: Definition, Phases & Sequence

4. The Cell Cycle: Definition, Phases & Sequence

Learn about the dividing and non-dividing states of the cell and discover the different phases of the cell cycle, including interphase, cytokinesis, and the stages of cell division.

Overview of Mitosis: Mitotic Spindle & Phases of Chromosome Segregation

5. Overview of Mitosis: Mitotic Spindle & Phases of Chromosome Segregation

Have you ever wondered how we grow? We start off as tiny embryos that eventually develop into adult humans, but how? The answer is through mitosis. We will look at mitosis and some specifics of it here.

Cytokinesis: Animal Versus Plant Cells

6. Cytokinesis: Animal Versus Plant Cells

What's a cell to do when it must divide in two? We'll explore cytokinesis and see how the process can differ in important ways when it comes to plant versus animal cells.

Asexual vs. Sexual Reproduction: Comparison & Characteristics

7. Asexual vs. Sexual Reproduction: Comparison & Characteristics

Did you know that some organisms can reproduce without a mate? Check out this video lesson on asexual versus sexual reproduction to discover the different ways organisms can reproduce and the main differences between mitosis and meiosis.

Overview of Reductional & Equational Cell Division in Meiosis

8. Overview of Reductional & Equational Cell Division in Meiosis

This lesson is going to give a general overview of the two divisions that take place during meiosis. We will take a look at why these divisions are referred to as reductional and equational division.

Nondisjunction & Aneuploidy: Definition & Examples

9. Nondisjunction & Aneuploidy: Definition & Examples

Learn why proper chromosome segregation is essential during meiosis. We'll see how having an extra chromosome can lead to Down Syndrome and also examine the consequences of having too few chromosomes. Disruptions to the delicate balance of cell division can have far-reaching effects.

Embryonic and Adult Stem Cells: Uses, Origins & Properties

10. Embryonic and Adult Stem Cells: Uses, Origins & Properties

How can we grow a brand new windpipe? Or a heart? In this lesson, we'll learn about embryonic and adult stem cells and how scientists are using them to give people a new lease on life.
