School and System Governance - Chapter Summary and Learning Objectives

As young children, many of us probably believed that our teachers and principals ruled the schools. Possibly, as middle school students, many of us became more aware of the powers of local Boards of Education, especially if our parents actively took part in School Board meetings. Finally, our required government class in high school might have filled us in a bit more about the state and Federal Governments' roles in governing the public school systems. This chapter's instructor will clearly explain the roles and specific powers of each of the three levels of governance. By the time you work your way through all of the lessons with multiple-choice quizzes in this chapter, you should understand and be able to discuss the following:

  • School Boards' roles in governing schools at the local levels
  • Each state's role and powers in controlling public education
  • The role of the Federal Government in our schools

Video Objective
The Local Board of Education's Role in Public Education Explain the role of the local Board of Education, citing and discussing specific powers.
