Objectives of the SHSAT Math: Whole Numbers Chapter

To gain admission to one of the eight New York City specialized high schools, 8th and 9th grade students are required to take the SHSAT. Schools rank students by their composite scores then choose individuals with the highest scores until they meet their attendance cap. This chapter on whole numbers can increase your chances of earning near the maximum score of 800 and getting into your first school of choice.

The math section of the test, like the verbal section, is 75 minutes in length and taken on paper. You will be asked 50 multiple-choice related to statistics, probability, arithmetic, geometry, algebra, word problems and trigonometry (for 9th graders). Use the self-assessment quizzes in this chapter to practice answering questions formatted similarly to those you'll see on the exam. Take the chapter exam to reinforce concepts learned in all the lessons.
