### About This Chapter

## SHSAT Math: Whole Numbers - Chapter Summary

Reviewing the videos in this chapter can give you the in-depth overview of whole numbers you need to successfully answer related questions on the SHSAT. In no time, you should have the knowledge to address the following:

- Showcasing how to find place values in whole numbers
- Understanding how to use word names for numbers
- Identifying and writing Roman numerals 1-20
- Using the four mathematical operations with whole numbers

The lessons provide you with the unique opportunity to access expert instruction from the comfort of your home or on the go via your smartphone or tablet. You can also submit questions about lesson topics to tutors and coaches who are eager to help.

### Objectives of the SHSAT Math: Whole Numbers Chapter

To gain admission to one of the eight New York City specialized high schools, 8th and 9th grade students are required to take the SHSAT. Schools rank students by their composite scores then choose individuals with the highest scores until they meet their attendance cap. This chapter on whole numbers can increase your chances of earning near the maximum score of 800 and getting into your first school of choice.

The math section of the test, like the verbal section, is 75 minutes in length and taken on paper. You will be asked 50 multiple-choice related to statistics, probability, arithmetic, geometry, algebra, word problems and trigonometry (for 9th graders). Use the self-assessment quizzes in this chapter to practice answering questions formatted similarly to those you'll see on the exam. Take the chapter exam to reinforce concepts learned in all the lessons.

### 1. Finding Place Values in Whole Numbers

After watching this video lesson, you will be able to find the location of any place value that you are given. You will also be able to identify them in any whole number.

### 2. Using Word Names for Numbers

Watch this video lesson to learn how the worlds of math and English mix together. Learn how to go from English to math and then back to English again. Learn how every single math number has an equivalent English word for it.

### 3. Roman Numerals 1-20

After watching this video lesson, you will be able to identify and write the numbers 1-20 using Roman numerals. You will learn how a Roman numeral is different from the numbers we are familiar with, and you will learn the rules of Roman numerals.

### 4. Arithmetic with Whole Numbers

There are four basic mathematical operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. These four operations are used in a wide range of everyday skills and are the fundamental blocks of arithmetic.
