About This Chapter
Sight, Hearing and Other Senses
Most of us don't give any thought to all the little parts that have to work together so we can hear music or see friends in the halls. Did you know that even your balance depends on the really tiny bones in your inner ear? This chapter will help you understand how amazing your eyes and ears really are by teaching you the structures and explaining the ways they conduct information to your brain. By the end of this chapter you should be able to:
- Understand the larger structures of the eye, such as the cornea, iris, pupil and lens
- Know the basics of the receptors that work at the back of the eye
- Generally describe how the information your eye takes in can be sent to your brain
- Grasp the general anatomy of the ear
- Understand the purposes of the different structures in the ear and how they allow you to hear and keep your balance
- Have a basic idea of the workings of the other senses
|The Eye and Eyesight: Large Structures||Learn about the parts of the eye that are big enough to be seen, such as the iris, lenses, cornea and muscles and understand how they impact vision|
|Receptors of the Back of the Eye: Retina, Rods, Cones & Fovea||Explore the microscopic parts of the eye, such as the retina and the rods and cones|
|How Receptors of the Eye Conduct Information via the Optic Nerve||Learn how those parts work together to send information through the optic nerve to the brain|
|Anatomy of the Ear's External Structures||Investigate the more major outer structures of the ear and learn what their purposes are|
|The Middle Ear: Structures & Functions||Understand how parts of the middle ear - such as the anvil, the hammer and the stirrup - function and contribute to hearing|
|How the Inner Ear Supports Hearing and Your Sense of Balance||Learn about the ability of the inner ear to send a signal to the brain that allows us to hear and keep our balance|
|Taste, Touch and Smell||Explore the basics of what these other senses do and how they work|
1. The Eye and Eyesight: Large Structures
Would you be able to see anything without a lens in your eye? Does the lens change shape? Does the iris? What structure gives you your eye color? Find out all of this and about things like the ciliary muscles and the cornea as we delve into this lesson.
2. Receptors of the Back of the Eye: Retina, Rods, Cones & Fovea
Find out how we see the world in color, what rods and cones are, and how camera film fits into all of this. In addition, you'll find out what the retina is and what gives you the ability to see at night.
3. How Receptors of the Eye Conduct Information via the Optic Nerve
You will learn how your eyes are able to see the image in front of you thanks to special cells called photoreceptors. In addition, these receptors have very important proteins called rhodopsin and photopsin; and all of these things work together to transmit information to your optic nerve.
4. Anatomy of the Ear's External Structures
What is the pinna? Is it the same thing as your earlobe? Does the eardrum have anything to do with the tympanic membrane? Find out as we explore all of this and other important structures involved in the sensation of hearing as sound enters your ear.
5. The Middle Ear: Structures & Functions
Your middle ear turns sound waves from the world around you into vibrations, which can be used to make nerve signals for your brain. This is a big job for the tiniest bones of your body. Learn about the little bones, or ossicles, of the middle ear.
6. How the Inner Ear Supports Hearing and Your Sense of Balance
You usually think of your ears for hearing, but did you know they also help you maintain your balance? In this lesson, you will learn about the structures of the inner ear and how they help support hearing and your sense of balance.
7. Taste, Touch & Smell: Proprioception & the Somatosensory System
How do taste, touch and smell work? Also, what is proprioception? Throughout this lesson, you'll get a detailed description on each of these remarkable senses.
