Ch 52: Solution Chemistry

About This Chapter

The physical sciences questions on the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) will test your knowledge of subjects including solution chemistry. Study solution chemistry with video lessons, then assess what you've learned with quizzes.

MCAT: Solution Chemistry - Chapter Summary

Using these engaging and comprehensive video lessons, you can refresh your knowledge of ions in solution, solubility and other solution chemistry concepts to prepare you for the physical sciences portion of the MCAT. Subjects in the solution chemistry chapter include:

  • Calculating molarity and molality concentration
  • Common names, formulas and charges for familiar ions
  • Complex ions and solubility
  • Hydration, the hydronium ion
  • Solubility and pH
  • Solubility equilibrium: using a solubility constant (Ksp) in calculations
  • The common ion effect and selective precipitation
  • Units of concentration

These video lessons can help make studying for the MCAT simpler. Lessons use clear, everyday language and examples you can relate to; this way, the information is easy to understand and remember.

MCAT: Objectives

This MCAT tests your preparedness for medical school by determining your general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics and biology skills and knowledge. The four parts of the exam cover physical sciences, biological sciences, verbal reasoning and a trial section.

The physical sciences section has 52 questions, testing your problem-solving skills and knowledge of scientific concepts. For 39 of these questions, you'll read seven passages and answer 4-7 questions about each. Thirteen other questions, independent of one another, complete the physical sciences section. All the questions on the MCAT are in multiple-choice format.

Each video lesson comes with a self-assessment quiz, so you'll know how well you're learning the material. You'll also get practice with the same types of multiple-choice questions you see on the MCAT itself.
