About This Chapter
States of Matter Basics - Chapter Summary
These short lessons introduce the different states of matter including liquids, solids, and gases. You'll learn the three main processes involved in matter changes, including boiling, freezing and melting, and how heat affects matter. Other topics covered include the process of evaporation and how it changes matter. After you read this chapter, you should be ready to:
- Explain simple particle theory
- Define and make physical change
- Describe the process of condensation
Our video and text lessons make even the toughest subjects easy to follow. Each lesson is followed by a multiple-choice quiz you can use to see how well you might do on an upcoming exam. If you're stuck on a particular topic, our instructors are available to offer their assistance. These learning tools are accessible to you at any time on any computer or mobile device.
1. Solids, Liquids & Gases Lesson for Kids
You know that water, air, and metal are very different materials. What makes them so different? In this lesson, we'll talk about solids, liquids, and gases, and what makes all of the materials on Earth fall into one of these three types.
2. Simple Particle Theory: Lesson for Kids
Have you ever wondered how solids, liquids, and gases are different? In this lesson, find out what makes them have different properties and what this has to do with the particles that they're made from.
3. Changing States of Matter Lesson for Kids
In this lesson, you'll learn how heat affects states of matter. You'll learn about the three main processes of changing matter: freezing, melting, and boiling, as well as a few additional processes for changing states of matter.
4. Physical Change Lesson for Kids: Definition & Examples
What do making a paper airplane and painting a picture of your favorite animal have in common? They're both examples of physical change. By the end of the lesson, you will be able to define physical change and understand how to make these changes yourself.
5. Evaporation Lesson for Kids: Definition & Facts
From lakes to oceans and even puddles, if water happens to escape into the air, we can call this process evaporation. Let's learn more about evaporation, how it relates to our body, and some really cool facts!
6. Condensation Lesson for Kids: Definition & Example
As you may already know, water can change state from solid to liquid to gas. In today's lesson, we are going to talk about how liquid changes from a gas to a liquid during a process called condensation.
