### About This Chapter

## TExMaT Master Mathematics Teacher 8-12: Absolute Value Problems - Chapter Summary

Review absolute values through this chapter's online video lessons so that you'll be up to speed when you take the TExMaT Master Mathematics Teacher 8-12 examination. Complete with step-by-step examples, the lessons can remind you how to take and use absolute values. Not only do the lessons outline techniques for solving absolute value problems, but they show you how to avoid common errors when working with these equations. You'll recall how to translate vertically and horizontally as well as how to use real numbers. This chapter could also help you to:

- Define absolute value and calculate the distance from zero
- Determine the absolute value of real numbers
- Complete practice problems with absolute values
- Perform transformations on absolute value graphs
- Work with dilations and reflections

By the time you finish this chapter's informational lessons, you could be well on your way to acing absolute value questions on the TExMaT Master Mathematics Teacher 8-12 examination. Capable instructors lead you through the above concepts as you learn and review at your own pace. Use the video tags to locate facts more quickly, submit your pertinent questions and check out the written transcripts that are included. Short lesson quizzes and a practice multiple-choice examination will determine how much you remember about absolute value problems.

### TExMaT Master Mathematics Teacher 8-12: Absolute Value Problems Chapter Objectives

The third section of the TExMaT Master Mathematics Teacher 8-12 examination is titled, 'Precalculus and Calculus.' This third part of the six-part examination is equal to 16% of the overall score. It may ask you to display your mastery of absolute values and apply some of the techniques you reviewed in this chapter. During the five-hour paper-administered examination, you'll be required to answer 90 multiple-choice questions and to complete one case study assignment.

### 1. What is an Absolute Value?

When we're talking and comparing numbers, we often don't care whether its positive or negative, just how big it is. This is often called the magnitude of a number and we find it by taking the absolute value. Learn all about it here!

### 2. Finding the Absolute Value of a Real Number

You can find the absolute value of any real number. This lesson will define absolute value, explain what real numbers are and give the steps to finding the absolute value of any real number.

### 3. Solving Absolute Value Practice Problems

There are many easy mistakes to make when solving absolute value equations. Learn how to avoid those mistakes here by working on examples of absolute value equations with operations on the inside and the outside of the absolute value.

### 4. How to Graph an Absolute Value and Do Transformations

Absolute value graphs normally look like the letter 'V', but transformations can change that 'V' in a number of different ways. As well as teaching you how to graph absolute values, this video will focus on a specific group of transformations called translations. Learn all about what that means here!

### 5. Graphing Absolute Value Equations: Dilations & Reflections

Although a basic absolute value graph isn't complicated, transformations can make them sufficiently confusing! In this lesson, you'll practice different transformations of absolute value graphs.
