How are substances identified? There are two major ways we can describe a substance: physical properties and chemical properties. Learn about how chemists use properties to classify matter as either a mixture or a pure substance.
2. States of Matter: Solids, Liquids, Gases, & Plasma
Learn the four states of matter in the universe: solid, liquid, gas and plasma. Learn about the differences in shape and volume among the four states, which of the states is the most common and why plasma conducts electricity.

Explore a chemical reaction at the molecular level. Learn about exothermic and endothermic reactions, what they look like and what happens when they occur. Understand enthalpy and how you can use it to predict whether a reaction will be exothermic or endothermic.
9. Chromatography, Distillation and Filtration: Methods of Separating Mixtures
What are some ways that mixtures can be separated? Watch this video to explore several examples of ways you can separate a mixture into its individual components.
10. Physical Property of Matter: Definition & Examples
Every time you look at an object, you observe its properties. In this lesson, you will learn about the physical properties of matter so you can identify them in the future.
11. Water Phase Changes: Physics Lab
After completing this lab, you will be able to explain what a phase change is, name the different types of phase changes, and complete demonstrations showing what happens to water when it undergoes phase changes. A short quiz will follow.
