About This Chapter
Units, Measurements & Conversions - Chapter Summary
In this chapter, our instructors discuss the standard units of measurement in both the metric and U.S. forms. You will be introduced to the distance formula and learn how to perform basic operations like addition and subtraction with measurements. The language of the metric system will be detailed, along with instructions to convert units within the metric system such as kilometers and miles.
Our instructors will help you review the three measures of temperature, the micrometer and the differences between both mass and volume and mass and weight. The chapter will also discuss of area and how it's used in math, as well as instructions about how to convert units of time and solve math problems that involve time. After you have reviewed these lessons, you should be able to:
- Recognize various forms of measurement in both metric and U.S. units
- Solve distance, addition, subtraction, and divistion problems with measurements
- Convert units for mass, volume and length in the metric system
- Compare the three temperature scales
- Differentiate between mass and weight
- Define and formulate area
- Identify the one number you need to convert units of time
- Solve world problems involving time
Our lessons and quizzes are designed by professional educators to make sure your learning experience is engaging and easy. Use the self-assessment quizzes to gauge how well you know the material and which topics you should focus on. These mobile-friendly lessons are available to you 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 1. How to Perform Basic Operations with Measurements
In this video lesson, you will learn how measurements are very much like variables when it comes to adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing them. You will also see examples of how they are done.
2. How to Convert Units in the Metric System
If you can make dinner, you can convert units in the metric system. It's that easy! In this lesson, you'll learn about the three key things you'll need to perform conversions.
3. How to Convert Standard Units of Measure
The United States uses pounds, miles, and Fahrenheit for measurements, but the rest of the world uses the metric system. This video lesson will help you to convert from one to the other easily, so you can understand kilometers and kilograms, too.
4. Converting 5 Kilometers to Miles
In this lesson, we will discuss the relationship between kilometers and miles, and learn how to use that relationship to convert 5 kilometers to miles. We will also look at some applications of this conversion.
5. Degrees Celsius: Definition & Conversion
Temperature refers to how hot or cold something is. The same temperature has different readings on the three temperature scales shown below - Fahrenheit, Celsius, and Kelvin. Learn more about the Celsius temperature scale, practice conversion among different scales, and test your knowledge with quiz questions.
6. Mass and Weight: Differences and Calculations
We often talk about mass and weight as if they are the same. While they are proportional to each other, they are not, in fact, the same. In this video lesson, you will learn to distinguish between the two, as well as convert one to the other.
7. What is Area in Math? - Definition & Formula
Area is the size of a two-dimensional surface. This lesson will define area, give some of the most common formulas, and give examples of those formulas. A quiz at the end of the lesson will allow you to work out some area problems on your own.
8. Converting Units of Time
After watching this video lesson, you will understand the units of time that we use to count time and know how to convert between these units. Learn the one number that you have to multiply and divide by to make your conversions.
9. How to Solve Problems with Time
It's amazing how much time can be saved when people work together. In this lesson, we'll practice figuring out just how much time we're talking about as we solve problems involving time.
