About This Chapter
Using Scientific Calculators
As you've probably learned, math is much easier if you can use a calculator. Like many people, you likely hated the early days in elementary school when calculations started getting harder but the teacher only let you use your pencil and paper. However, when you reached the higher math levels, you were likely expected to use a scientific calculator. These complex calculators can be harder to understand than the math problem itself if you don't know how to use them correctly. In these lessons, you'll learn everything you need to know about using a scientific calculator to assist you with advanced math problems.
A scientific calculator has a lot of additional buttons that go beyond the simple plus and minus. In the video lessons, you'll learn about radians, degrees and notations. Find out what buttons these correspond to on the calculator and what you need to do to avoid calculation errors when working with these concepts.
As the lessons move on, you approach the topics of trigonometry functions and exponentials. The lessons will specifically focus on the CLEP calculator so you're familiar with how it works. You'll also study the use of a scientific calculator to graph functions and solve equations by graphing. The lessons will show you how to determine the function intercepts and get the right solutions through graphing.
In the end, understanding how to use a scientific calculator will help make advanced math problems much easier to solve while also ensuring you are getting the correct answers.
1. Radians & Degrees on the CLEP Scientific Calculator
In this lesson, we'll review online calculators, in particular the CLEP online calculator. Review the difference between radians and degrees, the order of operations and scientific notation on the CLEP calculator.
2. Trigonometry Functions & Exponentials on the CLEP Calculator
In this lesson, review how to use the history on the CLEP calculator as we calculate sines, cosines and the inverse trigonometric functions. Finish by exploring exponentials and logarithms.
3. Solving Equations on the CLEP Scientific Calculator
In this lesson, learn how to use the Solver function of the CLEP calculator. With calculators, you can solve equations numerically (find a number answer) even when you cannot solve the problem explicitly.
4. How to Solve Equations by Graphing on the CLEP Scientific Calculator
In this lesson, review how to graph equations with the CLEP calculator. Given a function, find the maximum and minimum values over a range and the roots of the equation. Learn how you can use this to solve a system of equations by graphically finding intersects.
