Who's it for?
This unit of our AP Environmental Science Homeschool course will benefit any student who is trying to learn about water management and conservation measures. There is no faster or easier way to learn about environmental science. Among those who would benefit are:
- Students who require an efficient, self-paced course of study to learn about the carbon and nitrogen cycles.
- Homeschool parents looking to spend less time preparing lessons and more time teaching.
- Homeschool parents who need an environmental science curriculum that appeals to multiple learning types (visual or auditory).
- Gifted students and students with learning differences.
How it works:
- Students watch a short, fun video lesson that covers a specific unit topic.
- Students and parents can refer to the video transcripts to reinforce learning.
- Short quizzes and a Water Issues and Conservation unit exam confirm understanding or identify any topics that require review.
Water Issues and Conservation Unit Objectives:
- Explore the advantages and disadvantages of dams and reservoirs.
- Learn about different types of water pollution.

- Learn about the Safe Water Drinking Act and the Clean Water Act.
1. Cycles of Matter: The Nitrogen Cycle and the Carbon Cycle
Matter is constantly cycled between living and nonliving parts of the environment. Processes like photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation allow the carbon and nitrogen cycles to regenerate needed substances by recycling Earth's atoms.
2. What Are the Properties of Water? - Unique Properties that Support Life on Earth
In this video lesson you will learn about water and its unique properties. You will also develop an understanding of how these properties make life as we know it possible.
3. Water Resource Issues: Activities Affecting the Water Supply
This video lesson describes water resources issues such as aquifer depletion, overdrawing surface waters and salinization of irrigated soil. You will also learn about the impacts of activities affecting water resources.
4. Aquifer Depletion and Overdrawing of Surface Waters: Effects on Water Resources
This video lesson describes the effects of overuse on two major water resources in the U.S.: the depletion of the Ogallala Aquifer and the overdrawing of the Colorado River.
5. Water Conservation: How Water Management Can Lead to Sustainable Use
In this video lesson you will learn about the importance of water conservation. You will also learn about the two ways freshwater is used, and how proper water use can lead to sustainability in agriculture, homes, and manufacturing.
6. Water Storage: The Pros and Cons of Dams & Reservoirs
In this lesson, you will contrast the benefits and drawback of water storage. You will learn about how and why water is stored and how this affects the surrounding ecosystems and human communities.
7. Water Pollution: Definition, Types, and Sources
In this lesson, you will learn about the different types and sources of water pollution. You will gain an understanding of both surface water and groundwater pollution and the similarities and differences between them.
8. Water Treatment: Improving Water Quality
In this lesson, you will learn how water is purified for drinking, and how wastewater is treated before being put back into the environment. You will also learn about water purification issues in developing countries.
9. The Clean Water Act & Safe Drinking Water Act: Legislation for Clean Water
In this lesson, you will learn about the Clean Water Act of 1972 and the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974. You'll discover how both laws help keep our waters free of pollution and safe for everyday use.
