Numbers are the first and most basic unit of all mathematics. This chapter will help you review each of their essential properties. Use what you learn when you sit for the WEST Middle Grades Math exam. By the end of the chapter, you will have reviewed:

- The commutative, multiplication, distributive, and associative properties
- The addition, division, subtraction, and multiplication properties of equality
- The reflexive, symmetric, and transitive properties of equality

### WEST Middle Grades Math: Properties of Numbers Chapter Objectives

Your upcoming exam will test your knowledge of four main domains. Each of these will also have a range of associated competencies. The main domains are Number Sense and Operations, Algebra and Functions, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics, Probability, and Discrete Mathematics. This chapter links to the Number Sense and Operations domain. About 17% of the computer-based WEST Middle Grades Math exam will have questions from this domain. You'll be given 4 hours and 15 minutes to answer 150 multiple-choice questions.

There are three basic number properties that help to form the backbone of algebra. One of those properties is the associative property. This lesson will define the associative property and give some examples of how it works.

### 6. Addition Property of Equality: Definition & Example
